Jimmy Orman, Queensland's leading jockey, is set to trade the Sunshine State for the sands of Dubai in a three-week riding odyssey. The gun rider will reunite with trainer Michael Costa for a series of high-profile meetings before capping off his journey with a well-earned Japanese holiday.
Orman's return to the UAE comes on the heels of a stellar showing last season. The talented hoop etched his name in Jebel Ali's history books, notching an impressive five-timer – a career first – during a single meeting for Costa's stable.
"We spoke and Michael was always happy for me to come back again this year," said Orman, reflecting on his continued partnership with the expatriate Australian trainer.
Adding to his UAE exploits, Orman also tasted success at the world-renowned Meydan Racecourse during his previous stint. This time around, his schedule includes:
• October 26: Abu Dhabi
• November 2: Jebel Ali
• November 3: Abu Dhabi
• November 8: Meydan
"I love to go there more often, maybe one more time again this season. If he wants me to come, I'll come," Orman enthused, hinting at potential future forays.
Despite the allure of international riding opportunities, Orman remains committed to his Queensland base. When asked about a potential long-term UAE move, he stated: "I don't know. We would have to see, but that's unlikely. He doesn't need a stable jockey. He has got one already. I'm just happy to fly in and fly out whenever he needs me. I'm pretty happy here in Queensland to be honest."
Orman's dedication to his home state is evident in his dominant performances. The jockey currently leads the Brisbane Metropolitan Jockey's Premiership, a title he has held since the 2021/22 season. In two of his three Metropolitan title wins, Orman has surpassed the century mark for seasonal victories.
Following his UAE commitments, Orman will embark on a four-day holiday to Japan. "When we finish that I'm going to go to Japan for four days for a holiday, so I'm going to be away for probably three weeks," he explained.
This brief sojourn will offer a chance for the hard-working jockey to recharge before returning to his Queensland pursuits.
Orman's upcoming international adventure highlights the growing global reputation of Australian riding talent. His success in both hemispheres serves as a testament to the skill and adaptability of the nation's top jockeys.
