If Subjectivist wins the Gold Cup, the most prestigious event of the Royal Ascot, for the second time in three years, Charlie Johnston will achieve one of the greatest training accomplishments ever, just six months after acquiring sole ownership of the license at his family's yard located in Middleham, North Yorkshire.
Subjectivist's Return To Glory?
In the 2021 Gold Cup, Subjectivist triumphed over Stradivarius, a renowned stayer, despite being only four years old, indicating his potential to dominate the division for years to come.
Unfortunately, he sustained a serious tendon injury and remained absent from racing for 618 days. He made his comeback in February in Saudi Arabia, finishing last out of 13 runners.
The second day of Royal Ascot 2023 saw Frankie Dettori end his drought on Gregory in the Queen's Vase.
During the Dubai Gold Cup a month later, Subjectivist (4.20) showed signs of his old self, briefly appearing as the likely winner before fading towards the end. Despite his rivals bringing stronger recent form, including a St Leger victory for Eldar Eldarov, Subjectivist's emphatic success in the Gold Cup two years ago remains the best form on offer.
