Three-year-old Buenos Noches is back in work at Smith’s Warwick Farm stable and scheduled to trial early next month with a A$20 million ambition this season that starts with a display of worthiness to secure an Everest invitation.
Although the 2022 Poseidon Stakes’ winner couldn’t get his ducks lined up as planned in autumn, the
Group One-winning trainer hopes to have Buenos Noches up and running at the start of the new season to give the horse every opportunity to recover the lost time in the spring.
During last year's Melbourne carnival, the colt proved to be one of the top performers in his age group, narrowly missing out on a win to eventual Everest champion Giga Kick in the Danehill Stakes and finishing strongly for third place behind In Secret in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Buenos Noches: Back In Action
Upon his return this autumn, there were high hopes for Buenos Noches, who managed to place fifth in the Lightning Stakes and seventh in the Newmarket Handicap in two Gr.1 runs.
However, his racing season had to come to an end prematurely due to his poor performance in the Newmarket Handicap, followed by a persistent cough that even Smith couldn't cure.
“He didn’t pull up very well after his last run in Melbourne,” Smith said.
“The plan was to keep going with him but then he started coughing and we couldn’t get rid of the cough. He just kept coughing and coughing so we ended up spelling him.
“I’ve never had one like it and I may never have another one like it. But he’s perfect now.”
After a break, Buenos Noches has returned to Matthew Smith's stable at Warwick Farm and is set to trial in early October.
Smith, who has won Group One races as a trainer, is aiming to have the talented sprinter ready for the beginning of the new season in order to prove his ability and earn an invitation to Everest.
“He’s back in work and he will trial early July,” Smith said.
“I’d like to run him in August and then look at races leading into Everest, so we’ll see how it all plays out.
“The first couple of runs, we’ll know where we’re up to, but he’s going along well and he looks super.”
