Gregory, the Queen's Vase winner, is expected to follow the Stradivarius path to the St Leger at Doncaster. His connections are now considering entering the 3YO in the prestigious Group One Goodwood Cup.
Among their options for the two-mile race at Goodwood, John, and Thady Gosden also have their recent Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami, who, like Gregory, was bought by Qatari owners Wathnan Racing shortly before the royal meeting.
Gosden's Winning Streak Continues
In addition to the Goodwood Cup, Gregory holds an entry in the Lonsdale Cup at York next month. On Tuesday, his odds for the Goodwood Cup drifted out to 4-1 (from 2) with Coral, who made him the new favorite at 5-2 (from 4-1). Gregory is the son of Golden Horn, Gosden's 2015 Derby winner.
The Gosden yard's renowned stayer, Stradivarius, won the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot in 2017 and won the first of his four Goodwood Cups. He benefited from a 13lb weight advantage over his older rivals. Similarly, as a 3YO, Gregory would also benefit from a weight advantage. However, his stablemate, Courage Mon Ami, who is a year older, would not have the same advantage.
The most recent Classic generation contender in the Goodwood Cup was Santiago, the winner of the Irish Derby in 2020. However, he could only manage a third-place finish behind Stradivarius.
Joint trainer John Gosden said, "Gregory has come out of Royal Ascot in good shape and we could look at the Goodwood Cup with him. We also have Courage Mon Ami in there but he has other entries."
Gregory, who remained undefeated, impressively won the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood before his victory at Royal Ascot.
Coral's Dave Stevens said, "With Gregory receiving the weight allowance against the likes of Coltrane at Goodwood, connections seem keen to run the three-year-old rather than Courage Mon Ami, and as a result, the former is now the clear favourite for the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup."
