On Thursday, 3 August, Chesspiece aims to solidify his position in St Leger by delivering an impressive performance in the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes during Glorious Goodwood's third day.
The Gordon Stakes is a Group Three flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old horses. It is run at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile 3 furlongs and 218 yards (2,412 meters), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July or early August.
Rising Star: Nathaniel Colt Takes On Group Competition
After showing consistent improvement in each of his five starts for Simon and Ed Crisford, the Nathaniel colt is now stepping up to Group company following his dominant victory in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton last month.
Chesspiece, who was successful in a Newcastle maiden in November, finished third behind Military Order on his 3YO return at Newbury. However, he defied top weight in a York handicap and performed well in the Gr.2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, finishing in third place.
The event was established over a distance of 2 miles in 1838, and its original trophy was a gold vase donated by Queen Victoria. The race was initially confined to horses aged three, but it was opened to older horses in 1840. Its title was changed to the King's Vase in 1903, and it was given its current name in 1960.
