Buenos Noches proved to be a strong contender for a spot at the Everest after a remarkable first-up win at the Show Country Quality in Randwick.
Despite carrying the top weight of 58.5kg, the backmarker managed to overcome the challenge of a slow-paced race and emerged victorious with ease.
Outclassing his rivals, Buenos Noches made his way into the clear and sprinted rapidly to secure the win. Trainer Matt Smith was relieved to see the 4YO perform at his best, especially after narrowly missing out on a win against Giga Kick in the Danehill Stakes last year. Having not raced since finishing midfield in the Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap in March, Buenos Noches' recent win is a testament to his potential and skill. With such a promising start to the season, it is clear that Buenos Noches is one to watch in the upcoming races.
“You hope they can do that, but you never know when they are first-up,” Smith said.
“But he really quickened up ‘good’ today.
“He’s a talent. He had the form on the board, but you just want to see them come back and do it.”
Can Buenos Noches Secure Everest Slot?
Buenos Noches was purchased as an Inglis Classic yearling for a modest $40,000 and is now in the running for a portion of the lucrative $15 million prize if he can secure an Everest slot.
Despite a lack of prior interest, trainer Smith remains optimistic that the horse's impressive performance in the Show County Quality (1200m) on Saturday will attract the attention of potential slot holders.
“We have had a few nibbles, but nothing definite as yet,” Smith said.
“I think they (Everest slot-holders) were waiting to see him today.
“But the Everest is where we want to be, we are on our way, first box ticked.”
Smith will keep an open mind on where Buenos Noches (A$5.50) has his next start but races like the Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) on September 9 and The Shorts (1100m) a week later are in the mix.
“Everyone who has been on him says he has Group One ability, but we know they are hard to win,” Smith said.
When it comes to deciding where Buenos Noches will race next, Smith is keeping an open mind. He's considering a few different options, including the Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) on 9th September and The Shorts (1100m) a week later. While he hasn't made a final decision yet, he's weighing his options carefully and will choose the best race for the horse.
