On Tuesday, three TAB Everest aspirants named Hawaii Five Oh, Buenos Noches, and Overpass showcased their credentials with impressive wins at Rosehill Gardens trials. Mazu and 3YO colts King's Gambit and Ozzmosis also put in strong showings.
Hawaii Five Oh, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, won a strong trial over 1030m guided by Adam Hyeronimus. Mazu finished third in the same heat, 2¼ lengths behind Hawaii Five Oh, while King's Gambit put in a fast finish. Ruthless Dame was second. Both Hawaii Five Oh and Mazu are being primed for a first-up assault in Saturday week's Group two A$1m The Shorts at Royal Randwick. In the same race, they will face off against fellow The Everest hopefuls Buenos Noches and Overpass.
Buenos Noches won the Group three Show Country Quality first-up this spring but returned to the trials with success, edging out Godolphin mare Zapateo in a 900m affair. Trainer Matt Smith confirmed he would now run Buenos Noches in The Shorts.
Overpass ran sixth in last year's The Everest, and connections have been engaged in conversations with multiple slot holders for this year's edition of the race.
"He is going very well, trialled beautifully and could have gone faster," Baker said.
"He's ready for The Shorts now."
Baker has announced that Ozzmosis, an unbeaten stablemate, is a strong contender for an Everest berth. Ozzmosis won his 900m heat by nearly three lengths, showcasing his impressive capabilities. The plan is to first run Ozzmosis in the Listed Heritage Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on 23rd September followed by the Gr.2 Roman Consul Stakes in October.
