The annual Group One A$1.5 million TAB Epsom at Royal Randwick has seen a surge in nominations, with a total of 104 horses entered for the 2023 race. This marks a seven-year high for the iconic spring race, which is set to take place on 30th September as part of the A$87 million Sydney Everest Carnival. The increase in nominations, which exceeds 100 for the first time in seven years, is a testament to the rising popularity of the event.
The Royal Randwick handicap has seen a significant increase in nominations since the prize money was raised to A$1 million in 2018, and then again to A$1.5 million in 2021. Along with the TAB Epsom, two other Group One races - the James Squire Metropolitan and the Darley Flight Stakes - will be held on the same day at Royal Randwick. 74 horses have been nominated for the James Squire Metropolitan, while 65 horses are set to compete in the Darley Flight Stakes.
Sydney Everest Carnival Draws Crowds
According to James Ross, the Head of Racing and Wagering at the Australian Turf Club, the three races are the centrepiece of a 10-week festival of racing known as the Sydney Everest Carnival. The carnival has become a major event in the Australian sporting calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from around the country and beyond. With the high number of nominations for the upcoming races, it is clear that the carnival's popularity is only set to continue growing in the years to come.
“It’s pleasing to see continued strong nominations for three of our flagship races in the spring, and notably around the mile of the TAB Epsom and Darley Flight Stakes,’’ Mr Ross said.
“The strength of nominations for the TAB Epsom further highlight the significance of two major WFA races over the Royal Randwick mile in the 7 Stakes and ultimately the $5 million King Charles III Stakes on Everest Day.’’
“With the additional investment from our partners Racing NSW, this Spring will deliver over $87 million in prizemoney and is on track to attract some of the highest quality participation from Sydney, interstate and internationally.”
