Saudi Cup Winner Mishriff Captures Sheema Classic In His First Return-To-Turf Start
In what is best described by Meydan’s commentator Craig Evans a “crackerjack of a finish," the 4YO son of Make Belive created history when he won the biggest Turf feature of the evening - The Gr.1 Sheema Classic.
As the early contenders shortened stride around the final bend, Japanese raider Chrono Genesis and Gr.1 Japanese Oaks (2019) winner Loves Only You took to the front. As hose two battled side by side for the final 200m with Egan started his winning journey along outside of them. That trio then raced to the wire with Mishriff grinding out a victory, with the top three separated by a pair of necks.
Trainer Gosden added his name to the roll of honour for a third time following the 2010 victory of Dar Re Mi and the 2017 success of Jack Hobbs. The winning time was 2:26:65.
The Prince Faisal-owned Mishriff’s quest for more big-race honours will now turn to Europe for the summer, where he will attempt to add to his win in last year’s Prix du Jockey Club, while for the Gosden family, it was a memorable double on the night following Lord North’s Dubai Turf win.
Distance 2, 410 metres (1 1⁄2 miles), (2, 400 metres prior to 2010), Surface Turf, Track Left-handed, Qualification For Southern Hemisphere 3 year olds and Northern Hemisphere four-year-olds, Weight 3YO 54.5kg, NH & SH 4YO+ 57kg, Purse US$6, 000, 000
