Horse racing transcends geographical boundaries, uniting nations and cultures through the enthralling spectacle of equine athleticism. At the forefront of this international phenomenon stands Michael Appleby, a trainer whose career encapsulates the dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion that defines the sport.
For close to three decades, Mick Appleby has woven his name into the tapestry of thoroughbred racing. His journey began as a stable jockey for John Manners, where he honed his horsemanship, riding numerous winners. Subsequent roles as head lad for Roger Curtis and Andrew Balding at Kingsclere Stables furthered his knowledge and fueled his ambition.
2010 saw Mick launch his own training yard, rising from debut wins to 20 triumphs in 2011. As Mick Appleby continues his journey, one thing is certain the world is his racetrack, and it awaits his next exhilarating chapter.
For trainer Michael Appleby, it was more than just the start of another racing season when it marked his North American debut, a stage primed for international brilliance as Big Evs, Appleby's first runner in the United States, let alone the Breeders' Cup, seized the US$1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint in a heart-stopping performance. His victory is a testament to the meticulous training methods and astute selection process that define Appleby's stable, proving that European talent can flourish on American soil.
In an exclusive interview, trainer Mick Appleby shed light on his strategies for the upcoming 2024 Saudi Cup race meeting. This conversation delves into the stories of two rising stars in his stable – Annaf and Roberto Escobarr – and their paths to international acclaim.
ACQURING NEW TALENT
The journey begins with Annaf, entrusted to Appleby by Fosnic, a long-standing collaborator. While presenting some initial challenges, Annaf's pedigree promised exceptional potential. Sired by the formidable Muhaarar and dammed by the Storm Cat mare Shimah, this equine athlete carries a pedigree rich in potential. With Michael Appleby at the helm as his trainer and Fosnic Racing as his proud owners, the 5YO has carved a triumphant path on racetracks across the United Kingdom.
From 2022 to 2023, Annaf's hooves have thundered across prestigious turf at Ascot, Doncaster, Goodwood, Haydock, Kempton Park, Lingfield Park, Newbury, Newcastle, Newmarket (July), Sandown, and York and his victories are testaments to his versatility and unwavering spirit.
In 2023, he secured the coveted Gr.3 Bengough Stakes, Heritage Handicap, Kachy Stakes (LS), and Conditions Stakes,
Annaf is now being prepared for his international debut in Riyadh on Saudi Cup day in the Riyadh Turf/ Dirt Sprint.
Roberto Escobarr's arrival took a different route. Acquired at the October sales in Newmarket, his initial aim was racing in Dubai. However, Roberto Escobarr defied expectations with a stunning victory in the Gr.3 Italian St. Leger, a triumph that cemented his place in the forthcoming Riyadh race.
British-trained horse Roberto Escobarrr made history in the world of racing by becoming the first winner of the 1m7f Italian Classic since 2007. The 6YO, trained by Michael Appleby, dominated the race under jockey Marco Ghiani, leading from start to finish and leaving German competitors Alessio and Lion's Head behind at San Siro.
Before his victory in the Italian St Leger, Roberto Escobarrr had already established himself as a top-class performer. He won the Gr.3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown racecourse under the guidance of trainer William Haggas. In September, the horse was sold at Tattersalls for 40,000gns and joined the Gary Allsop Partnership.
Roberto Escobarrr's success not only adds to his own international haul but also serves as a testament to the skill and expertise of his British trainer, Michael Appleby.
THE ROAD TOSAUDI ARABIA: PREPARING FOR GLOBAL GLORY
In the lead-up to the prestigious Red Sea Turf Handicap, and Riyadh Dirt Sprint (or the Riyadh Turf Sprint), trainer Mick Appleby exudes both confidence and respect for the challenges ahead. His two-star charges, Annaf and Roberto Escobarr, are seasoned travellers, having competed successfully on international soil. Appleby emphasises that their routine training won't be significantly altered despite the stringent competition and unfamiliar settings. "Both horses are incredibly adaptable," he assures, "they don't get fazed by flying or changes in environment. They simply see each race as another stage to showcase their talent."
FACING THE WORLD’S FINES
Appleby readily acknowledges the fierce competition in these coveted races. "With competitors hailing from around the globe, each contender will be vying for victory," he points out. His primary focus, however, remains on his own charges. His main concern is ensuring Annaf and Roberto Escobarr are in peak physical and mental condition, fully prepared to unleash their best performances.
“I would just train them exactly the same as if they were going to be racing over here. There's no reason to have to change anything really.
“Obviously, at that level, everybody's trying and you're taking on the best around the world. They all go in there to try and win. They are very tough and competitive races. But you just got make sure you go there full fit for length,” said Appleby.
Adding to the excitement are the enthusiastic owners, Gary Allsopphe and Fosnic, who will be present to witness their horses compete in Saudi Arabia. The wait for the starting bell is surely electrifying, for it's not just horses and riders who will be competing, but legacies in the making.
BEYOND THE SAUDI SANDS: CHARTS & ASPIRATIONS
After the curtain falls on the Red Sea Turf Handicap, Riyadh Dirt Sprint, and Riyadh Turf Sprint in Riyadh, Annaf will head to the UK for a well-earned rest on British soil, while Roberto Escobarr, is likely to head to Dubai for the Dubai City of Gold or the Gold Cup on Dubai World Cup night depending on how he recovers from the Red See Turf Handicap. Beyond the immediate horizon, long-distance races whisper tantalizing possibilities for Roberto Escobarr upon his return to the UK including a tilt at the iconic 2024 Melbourne Cup.
“We have not really planned out anything yet. So I will sit down with Gary probably after Dubai and then we'll make a plan from there,” said Appleby.
MENTORING & THE GLOBAL STAGE:
In Appleby's unwavering determination, one discerns the echo of legendary Sir Mark Prescott, a figure he holds in unwavering respect as a mentor and inspiration. Their shared passion for equine excellence transcends generations, fueling Appleby's ambition to conquer new frontiers. His sights are set on prestigious races like the Breeders Cup, the electrifying Melbourne Cup in Australia, and the Bahrain International series, a testament to his desire to inscribe his name on the international leaderboard.
Michael Appleby's journey with Annaf and Roberto Escobarr exemplifies the alchemy of talent, meticulous planning, and unwavering dedication that defines a champion trainer. As they stand poised for the next chapter in their equine sagas, one thing is certain: with Appleby at the reins, their victories will not only reverberate across racetracks but also serve as an inspiration to aspiring trainers and horses alike.
