Global powerhouse Coolmore showed some of their might when they went to US$2.6 million for Lot 28 a colt by Darley stallion Nyquist to top The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select 2YO in Training Sale.
Fasig-Tipton reported 66 horses sold from 105 offered (a larger number of horses were withdrawn from the original catalogue of 186 individuals) for gross receipts of US$25,040,000. The average was US$379,394 and the median was US$300,000. The 39 horses that went unsold represented an RNA rate of 37.1%.
While The Gulfstream Sale was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during the 2019 renewal, Fasig-Tipton reported 59 horses sold from 100 offered for receipts of US$29,115,000. The average was US$493,475 and the median was US$375,000. Forty-one horses went unsold for an RNA rate of 41%.
Having made the trip across the pond to attend the premier auctions, Coolmore connections stayed busy buying throughout the afternoon. But in Lot 28 they said the colt was everything they were looking for in a top-level racing prospect.
Consigned by Wavertree Stables, agent, the colt is out of the Smart Strike mare Spinning Wheel and from the family of Preakness Stakes second Ride On Curlin as well as Test Stakes winner Victory Ride. Bred in Kentucky by G. Watts Humphrey, he had been purchased as a yearling for US$160,000 by Redwings from the Lane's End consignment to the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase.
