Mawj, a talented racehorse who won the 1,000 Guineas last year and helped trainer Saeed bin Suroor achieve his 500th Group win, is retiring to join Godolphin's breeding program.
She started her racing career with a bang, winning easily on Newmarket's Rowley Mile as a juvenile. In her 2YO season, she came second in the Albany race and then won the Gr.2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes and placed third in the Gr.1Cheveley Park Stakes. Returning in January last year, she won at Meydan and later triumphed with a remarkable win over a mile. This led her to compete in the prestigious G1 1,000 Guineas race, which she won in an exciting finish, makingher one of Godolphin's top-rated fillies in Europe.
Although she faced a setback and couldn't race in the summer, Mawj returned to form in October, winning the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge
Stakes. She narrowly missed out on victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile, coming second by a nose to Master Of The Seas.
Her trainer Saeed bin Suroor said, "Mawj is a very special filly, who showed her brilliance throughout her racing career. It was a fantastic day when she won the 1,000 Guineas and I was especially pleased that it was her who provided me with my 500th Group race victory out in Keeneland.
“She proved herself against the best horses across the world, winning in Dubai, the UK and the United States as well as finishing second in a Breeders’ Cup Mile. Everyone at Al Quoz and Godolphin Stables is going to miss her but we look forward to the next stage of her life as a broodmare.”
