Uruguayan trainer, Julio Olascoaga, has recently chosen Dubai as his operational hub and home, aiming to establish a foothold for his career and showcase the preeminent talent and the undeniable prowess of South American horses on the global stage in collaboration with leading South American trainer Antonio Cintra Pereira.
In 2007, I arrived in Dubai with prior experience in endurance training. After attending university, I began working with Antonio Cintra Pereira, managing the transportation of his horses to Dubai. I decided to continue collaborating with him during the season when the pandemic struck. This led to the establishment of a satellite stable in Dubai, with four local owners now involved in our venture.
Originating from Uruguay, we travel to Dubai via two flights, one to Europe and one back. The short season and logistical challenges of transporting horses to and from Uruguay prompted us to establish a summer operation in Dubai. Despite initial hurdles in communication, we gained valuable insights from Erwin Charpy, the master of Green Stables at the time. This marked the beginning of our journey in Dubai.
He manages horses and staff in Uruguay and I will continue leading the operation here. Of course, we speak daily.
As a trainer, I'm dedicated to continuous learning. I learn from others' experiences, their advice and sometimes their mistakes. Hard work is essential to compete at a high level consistently
As a trainer, I always aspire to enter our horses in the top races and achieve recognition. Also, with a focus on providing the best experience, particularly for young horses, I desire to enter them in prestigious UAE races.
We have been focused on bringing South American horses suitable for UAE racing. Dubai provides an excellent platform to showcase South American horses in a beautiful setting. However, we are now working on gradual expansion through outsourcing.
The UAE has seen significant development, making it a pleasant place with diverse activities beyond racing. The city's dynamic environment, with many foreigners, offers excellent, enjoyable opportunities. Although I’m usually focused on racing and I'm often at the stable during the season, but I do visit friends and invite them to race.
While training costs are lower in South America than in the UAE, prize money is less lucrative. However, the UAE offers an excellent platform to showcase horses to the public. The fierce competition here fosters skill development, making it a great place to be.
We must always ensure the best care for horses and prioritise animal welfare. The veterinarians and racing stables here are doing a better job than other countries.
It goes without saying that as the number of races rises, the total prize money also rises. Anyone will benefit from the same, but things are going well thus far.
It is advisable to bring high-calibre horses, as the competition intensifies daily.
