The Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup is set to witness a good old-fashioned stamina test over two miles on turf, with the majority of the field being represented by Europeans.
Last year's winning combination of Aiden O'Brien and Ryan Moore could potentially double up this year with the 4YO Galileo colt, Tower Of London. Despite being beaten by 12 lengths in the Irish Cesarewich last September, he returned with a narrow win at Riyadh after encountering various obstacles before getting up late on, thanks to a brilliant ride by Ryan Moore.
According to the weather forecast, there is no more rain expected, so the ground is likely to be good or faster, which is ideal for Tower Of London's chances. Expect him to make a last-minute pounce before heading back to Ireland, where he will be targeting all the summer Cup races.
Meanwhile, Siskany returns to take another shot at the Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup after being narrowly beaten by Broome in last year's edition. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the 6YO has won on all four of his other Meydan starts, including this season’s Listed Al Khail Trophy and the Gr.3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy.
Charlie Appleby has said, "Siskany is a very consistent horse who loves flat tracks. It looks like one of the strongest renewals of the Dubai Gold Cup in recent years but he goes into it in great form."
Trawlerman, who finished down the field in last year's race, also lines up for a second time. However, the John & Thady Gosden-trained 6YO has won all three subsequent UK appearances, including a game victory over Kyprios in the Gr.2 British Champions Long Distance Cup.
"He has been training well through the winter and seems to be in different form compared to 12 months ago,” said Thady Gosden.
Among the contenders are Roger Varian’s Eldar Eldarov, winner of the 2022 St Leger, and Andre Faber’s Sober, both adding fire to the lineup.
Passion And Glory, the Gr.1-placed son of Cape Cross, makes his third Gr.2 Dubai Gold Cup appearance for Saeed bin Suroor. Having finished fifth in 2021, he failed to make an impact in last year’s contest.
Saeed bin Suroor said, "Returning to two miles should suit Passion And Glory. It looks a strong race this year, although he has run well in it before and I have been pleased with his work."
