The American Hall of Famer and a familiar face at Meydan, Doug O'Neill, has etched his name in the record books once more.
This time, it's Two Rivers Over, a talented young colt, who propelled O'Neill to his second Godolphin Mile victory, a remarkable feat achieved after a 17-year hiatus. The win reignited memories of O'Neill's first triumph with Spring At Last in 2007, and the elation was palpable.
Two Rivers Over, a 4YO son of Tamarkuz, began his racing journey in 2022, showcasing early promise with victories at Del Mar, Ellis Park, and Zia Park. His crowning achievement in New Mexico, the Zia Park Derby win in November 2023, became the springboard for his audacious Dubai adventure. "Following his triumph at the Zia Park Derby," we learn, "the owners set their sights on the Godolphin Mile.” Owned by the trio of Todd Cady, Ty Leatherman, and piloted by jockey Edwin Maldonado, Two Rivers Over was poised to make his mark on the international stage.
Relief and exhilaration are evident in O'Neill's voice as he reflects on the race. "Shock!" he exclaims. "We were full of excitement.” He elaborates, capturing the essence of the moment: "It's amazing to win a race of such prestige on the international stage on such a big night.” The opportunity itself was cherished, and Two Rivers Over's stellar performance made it even sweeter.
The victory resonated deeply with everyone involved. O'Neill highlights the owners' reactions. "They were thrilled of course," he says.
"They were in awe of everything, racing at its finest.”
For some, it was their first taste of Dubai's racing grandeur, while others relived the experience with renewed excitement. Jockey Edwin Maldonado too, found himself reliving a past Dubai experience, transformed by the significance of the win. "Our jockey, Edwin," O'Neill shares, “was very happy to have the opportunity to ride for Ty Leatherman and Todd Cady on Two Rivers Over. It's all a blessing."
The focus now shifts to Two Rivers Over's future. A well-deserved period of rest awaits him before a carefully charted course is mapped. "We will give him time and then map out a course for him to participate in the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar at the end of the year," reveals O'Neill. The iconic Breeders' Cup beckons, offering another opportunity for Two Rivers Over to shine.
O'Neill doesn't shy away from sharing his excitement about the rest of his stable. "We have several 2YOs that we are working with now," he announces, his voice brimming with anticipation. The promise of untapped potential and the thrill of discovery are inherent in these young horses. He also highlights specific talents to watch – Vlahos, a three-year-old with Kantharos (Lion Heart) in his lineage, and Ah Jeez, another horse with a bright future.
Looking ahead, O'Neill's aspirations are clear. "Win," he declares with a chuckle, acknowledging the competitive spirit that fuels his passion. But beyond the victories, it's the love for the sport and the incredible horses that truly inspire him. "Just keep doing what we all love to do, which is to be around these amazing equine athletes that give us an extraordinary life," he emphasizes. The desire to compete again in Dubai is also evident. "We would love to have two or three to receive an invitation to bring back in 2025. That would be a goal," he reveals.
Doug O'Neill's second Godolphin Mile victory with Two Rivers Over stands as a testament to his dedication, his team's hard work, and the unwavering spirit of camaraderie within his stable. As Two Rivers Over prepares for his next challenge, and the 2YOs brimming with potential take centre stage, one thing is certain - Doug O'Neill's journey in the world of thoroughbred racing promises to be filled with exciting chapters yet to be written.
