The participation of top sprinting mare I Am Me in the US$15 million The Everest hangs in the balance following a concerning post-trial incident at Rosehill Gardens. The daughter of I Am Invincible was found to have blood in her right nostril after competing in a barrier trial on Friday, throwing her preparation into disarray.
Under Racing NSW protocols, I Am Me, Trained by Ciaron Maher must complete a satisfactory 1000-metre gallop under the watchful eyes of both stewards and veterinary officers before being permitted to take her place in the field.
The 5YO mare has been one of the standout sprinters of the season, with her blistering turn of foot making her a leading contender for the world's richest turf race, scheduled for October 14 at Royal Randwick.
Sources close to the Maher stable remain hopeful that this setback will prove minor, though the timing is far from ideal with the showcase event just weeks away. The US$15 million prize purse ensures that all participants must be in peak condition, with no room for uncertainty.
