As the dust settles on Al Ain's April finale, the UAE racing scene is already abuzz with excitement. With trials underway, the 2024/25 season promises a revised schedule and the return of familiar faces, both equine and human.
Topping the bill is Laurel River (USA), the reigning Dubai World Cup champion. Still perched atop the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings, the American raider continues his partnership with last season's champion trainer, Bhupat Seemar.
Previous Dubai World Cup winners have gone on to achieve further success, with California Chrome claiming the 2016 Pacific Classic (Gr.1) after his Meydan triumph, while Arrogate followed up his 2017 victory with a win in the Pegasus World Cup (Gr.1).
The UAE weighing room welcomes back some familiar faces while introducing fresh talent. Brazilian ace Silvestre de Sousa returns for his first full UAE season since 2017/18, bringing with him the experience of a Dubai World Cup victory.
Joining him is Daniel Tudhope, set for his inaugural full UAE campaign as the number one rider for Musabah Al Muhairi. Tudhope, a four-time winner at Royal Ascot in 2022, brings a wealth of international experience to the UAE circuit.
At Jebel Ali, the iconic yellow-and-black silks will be carried primarily by Ben Coen. However, the Irish jockey's early-season absence due to a collarbone injury has opened the door for James Orman. The Australian, who made waves last season with five wins from six rides at Jebel Ali's opener, is set for another short-term stint.
Adding depth to the Jebel Ali roster is Ray Dawson, returning after a year away. Dawson will provide a lightweight option for trainer Michael Costa, enhancing the stable's tactical flexibility.
Countdown To Curtain-Raiser
As Wednesday trials continue at Meydan and Jebel Ali, all eyes are on Abu Dhabi's season opener on October 26th. The revised schedule, featuring two additional Friday meetings at Meydan, has only heightened the anticipation among racing enthusiasts.
With a blend of established stars and emerging talent, the 2024/25 UAE racing season is shaping up to be a captivating spectacle. As the starting gates prepare to fly open, the stage is set for another year of high-octane action on the desert sands.
