Amanda Ross, former Olympic equestrienne and Victoria Racing Club ambassador, is partnering with recently retired Godolphin champion Cascadian (GB) as he transitions to his new role as a Flagbearer for the Godolphin Lifetime Care (GLC) programme.
The 8YO gelding joins fellow GLC Flagbearers Kementari, Hartnell, and Trekking, capping off an impressive racing career with 12 wins, 15 placings, and four Group One victories. Cascadian's major successes include the 2021 Doncaster Mile, 2022 All Aged Stakes, 2022 Doomben Cup, and 2023 Ranvet Stakes.
Ross, who represented Australia at the 2000 Sydney Olympics riding the off-the-track thoroughbred Otto Schumacher in eventing, was also shortlisted for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on another former racehorse. Her extensive experience with ex-racehorses makes her an ideal partner for Cascadian's next chapter.
Reflecting on their collaboration, Ross enthuses: "He's actually blown my expectations out of the water. It's quite phenomenal when I start listing all the things he can do." She likens working with Cascadian to "working with a professional from another industry. I feel like he knows a lot and I don't have to explain much. Once he gets it, he's very professional."
Ross is taking a holistic approach to Cascadian's training, focusing on flexibility and body awareness for dressage, show jumping, and eventing. "I'm giving him experiences outside the arena, such as trail riding, opening gates and doing pole work and we'll progress to jumping soon. I want him to express what he enjoys and where his strengths lie, so I'm really excited," she explains.
As a GLC Flagbearer, Cascadian will play a crucial role in promoting awareness and care for the thoroughbred breed while supporting Godolphin-owned horses transitioning from racing to post-racing careers.
Jason Walsh, Godolphin Australia Bloodstock Manager, expresses confidence in Cascadian's future: "We take pride in showcasing the versatility of thoroughbreds and I can't think of a better example than Cascadian. He's the kind of rare animal that whatever he turns his hand to, he will be a success."
Ross plans to compete with Cascadian as an all-rounder in the RV Off The Track (OTT) Series, exploring disciplines such as showing, dressage, and show jumping, with eventing as a potential future goal.
This partnership between Ross and Cascadian highlights the deep connection between thoroughbred and rider, showcasing the remarkable potential of racehorses in their post-racing careers. As they embark on this exciting journey, the duo is set to demonstrate the adaptability and talent of these exceptional athletes beyond the racetrack.
