Trainer Mick Appleby is exuding confidence about Big Evs' chances of overcoming a challenging draw in his quest for consecutive Breeders' Cup victories at Del Mar this Saturday. The 4YO speedster, who captured the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita last term, faces his career finale from stall 11.
The Blue Point colt finds himself alongside fellow British raider Bradsell, trained by Archie Watson, who breaks from gate 12. The American challenge is spearheaded by Steven Asmussen's favourite Cogburn, setting the stage for an international clash of titans.
Previous winners of this prestigious contest include Golden Pal, who went on to land the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, and Caravel, who subsequently claimed the Giant's Causeway Stakes at Keeneland.
Adding to Appleby's strong hand is Big Mojo, who aims to emulate his stablemate's juvenile success. Sporting the same silks of owners Paul and Rachael Teasdale, the promising 2YO has drawn favourably in stall three. His ongoing rivalry with Wathnan Racing's Aesterius stands at one victory apiece following their compelling British encounters.
"We'd have preferred to be drawn four or five, but it is what it is and he has very good gate speed and hopefully he can get out quick and go forward," Appleby said of Big Evs' draw. "We have Bradsell on his outside, who is also very quick. It's just how quick he can get out and across until he gets to the bend."
Reflecting on Big Mojo's chances, the trainer added: "As soon as we got him and started working we knew we had something special. He was showing us similar signs to Big Evs the year before when he came to us. He's a lot bigger than Big Evs and I think he will improve a lot as a 3YO."
Both raiders will be partnered by Tom Marquand, who steered Big Evs to glory last year. The ground at Del Mar is expected to be firm, conditions that should suit both Appleby contenders.
"It would be very nice if we were to get a double. But I think they both go there with live chances. They are fit and well and should both run their races, we just hope for a bit of luck in running," concluded Appleby.
