The prestigious Al Shaqab International Arabian Horse Show has leapt into action with a stellar field of 285 equine athletes gracing the Longines Indoor Arena in Qatar on Wednesday, marking a significant expansion in its second year.
The four-day extravaganza, backed by the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund (Daam), has drawn 63 entries from GCC countries, underlining its growing regional significance.
Opening day honours in the Filly Foals (1A) went to Ghuyum KL, representing Kahil Stud, with Salma Al Wajbah from Al Wajbah Stud claiming second, while Athba from Al Thamer Stud secured third.
The 1B category saw Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani's charge Rayyana Mudhar emerging victorious, followed by Kahil Stud's Gaza KL, with Razan Al Jazeel from Al Jazeel Stud completing the podium.
Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani's dominance continued in the colts' division, with Adnan Mudhar leading a one-two finish ahead of stablemate Yazid Mudhar. Ki It's Safi, carrying the colours of sons of Mubarak Al Khalidi, secured third place.
This year's edition breaks new ground with the introduction of a "Newborns Round", elevating its status as a qualifier for prestigious events including the World Horse Beauty Championship, Katara Festival and the Global Champions Tour.
"The competition was strong on its first day," noted Saif Al Nuaimi, Deputy Executive Director of Al Shaqab. "The championship is one of the major shows in the region and in this edition it is witnessing a large increase in the number of participating horses from within and outside Qatar."
Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani, celebrating his stud's impressive opening day, added: "This championship is witnessing strong competition between owners in order to win medals."
The action continues Thursday with qualifiers for two and three-year-old fillies and one-to-three-year-old colts, promising more spectacular displays of Arabian horse excellence.
