Rashid Alblooshi etched his name into UAE racing history at Meydan on Friday evening, becoming the first Emirati to preside over proceedings as head steward at the world-renowned racecourse.
The former endurance specialist, whose stellar riding career saw him claiming numerous victories for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum both domestically and internationally, has been serving as a steward since 2021. His transition to officiating came under the watchful eye of Sam Shinsky at the Emirates Racing Authority.
The appointment marks a significant stride in the ERA's ongoing mission to enhance Emirati participation across all sectors of the sport. Mohamed Al Shehhi, ERA Chairman, was effusive in his praise: "This is a monumental moment for UAE racing. Rashid's accomplishment underscores our mission to see more Emiratis rise to the forefront of this prestigious sport."
The groundbreaking development at Friday's third meeting of the season received further endorsement from Abdulaziz Al Noori, Head of Racing Development, who remarked: "The ERA remains steadfast in its efforts to support and develop Emirati talent across the racing spectrum. Rashid's appointment Friday as interim head steward is a testament to the progress we're making toward achieving this vision of more local involvement."
Meydan Racecourse, home to the world's richest race meeting - the Dubai World Cup - has previously seen the likes of Jean-Michel Costamagna and Terry Bailey serving as chief stewards. Past meetings at this prestigious venue have witnessed stellar performances from global racing powerhouses including Arrogate, winner of the 2017 Dubai World Cup, and Thunder Snow, who made history by claiming back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019.
This appointment represents another significant milestone in the UAE's racing journey, which began with the inauguration of Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in 1992 before the spectacular Meydan facility opened its doors in 2010.
