A powerful contingent of British and Irish-trained horses are heading to Bahrain this winter, with a record 26 challengers making the journey to compete for enhanced prize-money worth US$1million in the Bahrain Turf Series, plus US$80,000 in bonuses.
Up-and-coming trainers George Boughey, James Ferguson, George Scott, Gavin Cromwell, Charlie Johnston and Jack Channon are leading the charge, with their sights set on the series comprising six sprint races and six middle-distance contests under the newly installed floodlights at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club.
The action begins on Friday with the US$80,000 Al Manama Cup, where Jubilee Walk represents a first Bahrain runner for trainer James Ferguson and owners China Horse Club. The progressive 3YO colt, rated 97, has not been seen since Royal Ascot in June.
Ferguson said: "After Royal Ascot, China Horse Club said to me they were very interested in having international runners. Bahrain is always somewhere they have wanted to be represented and we feel this horse fits the profile perfectly."
George Boughey, successful last term with Thunder Moor, fields two runners including the Amo Racing-owned Walbank. "We are hopeful Walbank can be competitive in the sprint races. He is a fast ground horse who was running on slow ground at the back end of the year when we just could not catch a break with him. So, he arrives on a potentially good handicap mark," said Boughey.
The US$80,000 Al Muharraq Cup over 2,000m features a compelling clash between domestic and international talent. Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell sends his first Bahrain runner in Royal Ascot winner Snellen, while Lion Of War, representing Charlie Johnston and owner David Howden, brings strong British form.
Previous visitors Lucander and Box To Box, trained by George Baker and Hugo Palmer respectively, add depth to a competitive renewal, having enjoyed successful campaigns in Bahrain previously.
Last season's series produced a notable success story in Isle Of Jura, who progressed from handicaps to capture The Crown Prince's Cup and The King's Cup, with the latter now upgraded to Gr.3 status for international competition.
