Facteur Cheval, trained by Jerome Reynier, is gearing up for his first dirt attempt in the Gr.1 Maktoum Challenge at Meydan on January 24, with Mickael Barzalona secured for the mount. The gelding, who landed last year's Dubai Turf, touched down in Dubai on January 10 for his seasonal bow.
Barzalona's association with the Irish-bred runner has yielded high-class performances, including a runner-up spot in the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot and a third in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, both Group One contests.
Previous Maktoum Challenge victors include Thunder Snow, who went on to claim dual Dubai World Cup glory, whilst Military Law and Salute The Soldier used this race as a springboard to international success.
Team Valor International's Barry Irwin Said: "Maxime Guyon Rode Him To win the Dubai Turf and we have the utmost respect for him. However, dirt is a new game for our boy and Mickael has won the Maktoum Challenge four times, so he has the experience and expertise for the job."
The 6YO's desert campaign could extend to the US$20 million Saudi Cup on February 22 and the US$12 million Dubai World Cup on April 5, contingent on his dirt debut. Should the surface switch prove unsuccessful, connections will revert to defending his Dubai Turf crown on World Cup night.
Facteur Cheval, who races in partnership with Hollywood producer Gary Barber, has consistently demonstrated his class at the highest level. His versatility could now open doors to racing's most valuable prizes.
