Sierra Leone returned to serious work at Payson Park on Saturday, clocking three furlongs in 37.80 seconds as preparations intensify for next month's Gr.1 Saudi Cup. The Breeders' Cup Classic hero, trained by Chad Brown, is being aimed at the US$20 million contest at King Abdulaziz on February 22.
Following his month-long break at Ashford Stud, the son of Gun Runner has maintained peak condition, much to the delight of his connections. "He went nice and smooth," Brown reported. "He galloped out with a lot of energy and cooled out quick. We're right back on track again and it looks like our first goal is to try and make the Saudi Cup."
With less than seven weeks until the 1⅛-mile contest, Brown is implementing a precise weekly work schedule. The Classic-winning handler was particularly impressed with his charge's condition, noting: "Even though we gave him a little bit of freshening, he didn't seem to lose any fitness at all. He's settled back into his job well. I was very pleased with his work, actually pleasantly surprised at how fit the horse is."
Sierra Leone's stellar three-year-old campaign included victories in the Gr.1 Blue Grass Stakes and Gr.2 Risen Star Stakes, alongside placed efforts in the Gr.1 Kentucky Derby, Gr.1 Belmont Stakes, Gr.1 Travers Stakes, and Gr.2 Jim Dandy Stakes. The colt races for the powerful partnership of Peter Brant, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg, and Brook Smith, and is a leading contender for Eclipse Award honours as champion 3YO male.
