Randwick handler John Thompson is plotting a path to glory as his unbeaten youngster Bel Merci readies for her first public appearance of 2025 at Tuesday's Royal Randwick barrier trials.
The exciting prospect, who made headlines capturing the Gr.3 Gimcrack Stakes over 1000m at headquarters last October, is being primed for a tilt at Australia's premier juvenile contest.
"She has been back about eight weeks and is going good," Thompson said. "I think she is probably ready a little early but that's OK, it gives me a week or so up the sleeve."
The promising juvenile, partnered by regular pilot Chad Schofield, tackles a 740m heat as connections eye bigger targets ahead.
Thompson's carefully crafted programme sees Bel Merci heading to the Gr.2 Silver Slipper (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 22, followed by the Gr.2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick fortnight later.
The ultimate target remains the Gr.1 Golden Slipper (1200m), worth US$5 million, on March 22.
Thompson also saddles unraced King's Legacy filly Open Secret in the same heat, noting: "She is a really nice filly but we don't really know much more than that."
The session features Group One heroines Lady Shenandoah and Manaal, both eyeing the Gr.1 Surround Stakes (1400m), carrying a US$750,000 purse, at Royal Randwick on March 1.
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott's Golden Rose placegetter Mayfair joins that heat, while unbeaten Clean Energy, sibling to former sprint star Sunlight, contests a separate 740m trial alongside last term's Kindergarten Stakes victor Espionage.
Gr.2 Missile Stakes winner Schwarz continues his preparation over 1050m, with Warwick Farm hosting additional trials on Thursday.
