For Kabirkhan, whose name combines the Arabic word for "mighty" with the Kazakh word for "king," the journey from a US$12,000 yearling purchase to Group One winner has more than lived up to his royal moniker. When Kabirkhan crossed the finish line to win the Gr.1 Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan – it wasn't just a first Group One victory for trainer Doug Watson – it was a moment of validation for an owner whose faith in his horse has never wavered, despite a journey that has taken him from the steppes of Kazakhstan to the glittering lights of Dubai. The win wasn't just another trophy for the cabinet; it represented the culmination of a dream that began in the heart of Central Asia and has now captured the imagination of the racing world.
"I have always believed in Kabirkhan; he is the son of his father, California Chrome, and to this day, my faith in him has not faded. Thanks to God, I believe that Kabirkhan will still bring us joy," says Tlek Mukanbetkaliyev, his voice filled with pride and emotion.
For Mukanbetkaliyev, horses aren't just an investment – they're a cultural legacy that runs as deep as the vast Kazakh steppes themselves. "We Kazakhs are a nomadic people. The horse plays an important role in the traditional culture of Kazakhstan. It is a sacred animal with the qualities of a protector and a talisman," he explains. This deep-rooted connection to horses has influenced his approach to racing, driving him to showcase his homeland's rich equestrian heritage on the global stage.
"I have loved horses since childhood, and my dream has been to participate in professional horse racing so that more people could learn about our country and culture," Mukanbetkaliyev shares, revealing the broader cultural mission behind his racing endeavours. His passion for horses isn't merely about winning races; it bridges cultures.
The story of Kabirkhan is nothing short of remarkable. Purchased for just US$12,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the son of California Chrome began his career at Almaty Hippodrome in Kazakhstan, where he dominated a three-horse maiden race despite a slow start. After winning his first three starts in Kazakhstan, earning a mere US$3,458, it was clear that he needed bigger challenges.
The decision to purchase Kabirkhan was rooted in both emotional and practical considerations. "Initially, I followed the career of California Chrome, and Kabirkhan resembled his father a lot in appearance, which is why I chose him," Mukanbetkaliyev reveals about his initial attraction to the horse. This intuitive connection would prove prophetic as Kabirkhan began his remarkable ascent through the ranks.
Kabirkhan's success has reverberated throughout the region, inspiring a new wave of investment in international bloodstock. "Undoubtedly, Kabirkhan's victory and participation in the international horse races in Dubai has impacted Kazakhstan and Russia, leading to a significant increase in the purchase of horses at auctions in America and Europe. This season, nine horses from Kazakhstan and six horses from Russia are participating."
Mukanbetkaliyev has developed a focused approach to bloodstock acquisition, primarily concentrating on specific prestigious sales. "I buy horses online through an agent in America at the Keeneland auction. I have also attended the Arqana auction in Europe," he explains, demonstrating his growing sophistication in the international bloodstock market. His methodical approach to sales has proven successful, as evidenced by Kabirkhan's remarkable rise from a modest purchase to international stardom.
What sets Mukanbetkaliyev apart is his unwavering commitment to putting his horse's well-being first. The American campaign plans, though carefully considered, had to be adjusted when things didn't progress as hoped. "After two months of rest at WinStar Farm, we sent Kabirkhan to Brad Cox. After working with Kabirkhan for a few days, Brad Cox recommended that we continue the recovery for another couple of months, stating that the horse was not yet ready for serious training," he explains. "Since we didn't have enough time to prepare for the major races in America, we decided to prepare Kabirkhan for the new season in Dubai."
The setback didn't deter Mukanbetkaliyev's long-term vision for Kabirkhan's career. He remains cautiously optimistic when asked about future American campaign plans. "I wouldn't want to jump ahead of things; for now, we want to participate in races in the Middle East. The most important thing for me is the horse's health. If everything goes well, we will consider races in America." This measured approach exemplifies his philosophy of prioritising the horse's well-being over immediate racing opportunities.
This patient approach reflects his broader philosophy of placing the horse first. "The health of the horse is my top priority, and our team's entire future campaign planning is built around that." This commitment to welfare over immediate success has earned him respect throughout the racing world.
For Mukanbetkaliyev, success in racing isn't just about personal achievement – it's about creating a lasting legacy for his nation. "A victory in the Dubai World Cup would mean to me that I have written our country into history," he says with quiet determination. The significance of potentially becoming the first Kazakh owner to win one of the world's richest races isn't lost on him or his countrymen.
When discussing Kabirkhan's personality, his affection for the horse is evident. "Kabirkhan is a special horse for me. In my opinion, he resembles his father a lot, both in appearance and character. He is very intelligent, curious, and a bit mischievous. He doesn't like to lose." This description reveals not just a racehorse but a character who has captured hearts from Kazakhstan to Dubai.
The physical development of Kabirkhan continues to impress, with Mukanbetkaliyev noting that the horse has "matured and become physically stronger" during his time in the UAE. This improvement has been evident in his performances, culminating in his Group One success, which has established him as a genuine contender for the world's biggest races.
Looking to the future, Mukanbetkaliyev remains ambitious but grounded. "If we're talking about a dream, after the Dubai World Cup, I would like to participate in the Breeders' Cup Classic. It's all in the hands of God," he reflects. This combination of ambition and humility characterises his approach to the sport.
As Mukanbetkaliyev continues his journey in international racing, his approach serves as a blueprint for emerging racing nations. His combination of cultural pride, patient horsemanship, and global ambition has already helped put Kazakhstan on the racing map. With Kabirkhan carrying the hopes of a nation, this could be just the beginning of an even more remarkable story. The US$12,000 yearling purchase has already far exceeded expectations, earning US$815,436 in prize money. However, for Mukanbetkaliyev and Kazakhstan, the true value of their equine hero extends far beyond mere financial returns.
