Romantic Warrior is primed to continue his global crusade as Danny Shum's champion prepares to face seven rivals in Friday's Gr.1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan, worth US$503,000.
The world's highest-earning racehorse will clash with defending champion Measured Time, who memorably set the 1800m course record in this contest last term for trainer Charlie Appleby. The Godolphin handler strengthens his hand with Ottoman Fleet as he seeks a fifth triumph in the race since 2016.
James McDonald, who partners the Hong Kong superstar, expressed satisfaction after Tuesday morning's exercise at Meydan, where Romantic Warrior moved with characteristic fluency alongside workmate Romantic Charm.
"He was really good, had only a light piece of work and breezed home nicely, so very happy," McDonald said. "He was just breezing – not fast for him. He's really good – (in) good form."
The 6YO, who has amassed US$22.7 million in prize money, faces a quality field including Ancient Rome, Holloway Boy, Poker Face, Royal Dubai and San Donato. This assignment serves as a stepping stone to the Gr.1 Saudi Cup in Riyadh on February 22.
Shum, who orchestrated memorable victories in Australia's Gr.1 W.S. Cox Plate and Japan's Gr.1 Yasuda Kinen, remains confident about his stable star's preparation.
"It's almost the same, not much difference," Shum reflected. "He's good, healthy, happy and strong. He's now used to all the trips overseas. He's a tough horse."
The champion last appeared when securing a historic third consecutive Gr.1 Longines Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin in December, worth US$5.1 million. The barrier draw for Friday's contest will be announced on Wednesday.
