Laurel River will not defend his Dubai World Cup crown at Meydan on April 5, with connections confirming the 7YO requires more time to reach peak fitness.
The Bhupat Seemar-trained star, who stormed to an eight-and-a-half-length victory in the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup 12 months ago, has raced just once since that commanding performance, winning the Firebreak Stakes at Meydan when returning to action in January.
Seemar and owners Juddmonte had initially planned to contest the Saudi Cup in February, but a training setback ruled him out of what proved to be a thrilling clash between Forever Young and Romantic Warrior, with the Japanese-trained contender claiming victory.
"Laurel River is doing very good, but after his last gallop, we realise that there will not be enough time to get him fit for a race of this calibre," Seemar told the Dubai Racing Club.
"Juddmonte decided to give him the time and he can come back for the Saudi Cup and Dubai World Cup in 2026."
With Laurel River's withdrawal, the Yoshito Yahagi-trained Forever Young, who triumphed in Saudi, now stands as clear market leader for the US$12 million contest at Meydan.
The Japanese raider will be seeking to continue his impressive form having already demonstrated his class when defeating Hong Kong star Romantic Warrior in Riyadh last month.
