Connections of undefeated sprinter Private Harry are relishing the prospect of taking on Hong Kong's superstar Ka Ying Rising in The Everest after confirmation the world's highest rated sprinter will contest the US$20 million feature.
The Australian Turf Club finalised arrangements with the Hong Kong Jockey Club this week, leasing its slot for an initial two-year period and paving the way for Ka Ying Rising to represent Hong Kong in the showpiece event.
The Hong Kong flyer, trained by Frankie Lor, boasts an impressive record of 13 victories from 15 starts and heads early markets for the October feature. Private Harry, prepared by Nathan Doyle at his Newcastle base, sits prominently in calculations for the autumn's premier sprint.
Part-owner Sean Driver of Kurrinda Bloodstock expressed excitement about his colt's physical development during the spelling period, highlighting significant muscle gain and growth.
"All I will say is they're going to be good to beat him," Driver said. "He has put on between 65 and 80 kilos, all muscle. He has grown about an inch-and-a-half. You've got to remember, he's only three so he's still got that bit of growing to do. He looks outstanding. I'm excited."
The 3YO returned to work two weeks ago, beginning his gradual preparation for the spring carnival. Private Harry hasn't appeared since extending his perfect record to five wins in the Gr.1 The Galaxy over 1100 metres in March.
Driver confirmed the colt would likely resume in The Shorts before progressing through the Premiere Stakes en route to The Everest. Despite describing Private Harry as a lazy trackworker who rarely impresses during training gallops, Driver emphasised his professionalism on raceday.
"If you're going off his trackwork, you might not sleep at night," he said. "But his IQ is through the roof. I imagine he will have his first trial at home, his second trial we'll come to Sydney, an exhibition gallop and then we'll go first-up."
Currently three horses have secured Everest slots, with Private Harry, Ka Ying Rising and T J Smith Stakes winner Briasa confirmed for the spring spectacular.
ATC head of racing and wagering Nevesh Ramdhani welcomed the Hong Kong representation, describing it as a significant coup for Sydney racing.
"Having representation from Hong Kong with such an exciting horse just adds to the depth and quality of not only The Everest but the entire Sydney Everest Carnival," Ramdhani said.
Ka Ying Rising is expected to remain in Sydney following The Everest to contest the US$3 million Russell Balding Stakes.
