Danish Champion Trainer Olsen a Meydan veteran makes his 2022 debut with two stable stars for their owner Lone Kaj-Nielsen. Ahead of their starts at Meydan, Ten Furlongs sits down with Olsen to talk about his horses, Red Cactus, and their owner who loves watching her horses race in Dubai.
Q: Please tell us about your plans for Learn By Heart which ran in the City of Gold two years ago.
A: He has a very low handicap. So of course, I want to run him in the right handicap in Dubai. And now that he's gelded so he is a more malleable horse. He placed second in the Gr.3 Oslo Cup last year, so I hope to aim him at some of the Group Three races at Meydan.
Q: Would you be able to tell me which group race he won in Scandinavia ? And what are your plans for Pjerrott?
A: He is a lovely horse. He won a 1600m race in Sweden on the dirt track and another 1800m in Denmark, by 10 lengths. He has a great dirt pedigree from his sire and so I hope to aim him for the UAE 2000 Guineas there.
Q: And will he be aimed at any races in the region like in Saudi or Qatar?
A: No, he will only race in Dubai as we have to prepare him for the Swedish Derby when he comes home. In 2016 we raced Red Cactus in a similar fashion and when he came home from Meydan, he won Swedish Derby.
Q: What are your travel plans for Dubai?
A: I will come down in January and hope to stay for two weeks. Also, when my horses run, I will take the flight down there. It's a lovely place to come to Dubai. I like to stay there.
Q: What has been your best race in Dubai?
A: The best race for me was when Red Cactus was beaten by Art Du Val by a very short head down there in the Strata Trophy Handicap.
Q: Please tell us about the owner of Pjerrott and Learn By Heart?
A: Lone Kaj-Nielsen owns both horses. She is 84 years old and likes to go to Dubai. She stays at the Meydan Hotel and loves to watch her horses race. I want to run both of them in the same week so she can see both horses.
