El Caballo emerges as just about the one to beat having narrowly seen off Tiber Flow and Flaming Rib (with several of these further behind) on his last 2 starts. The son of Havana Gold was certainly well-fancied for this, and will be arriving here on the back of six straight victories – most recently in the Gr.2 Cazoo Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park.
While Perfect Power trained with a Guineas in mind this season and he may emerge as the chief threat, as the Richard Fahey-trained progressive colt has shaped like he could be a real top notch performer over six furlongs.
It may still be in its infancy, but the Commonwealth Cup, won by the likes of Muhaarar, Caravaggio and Campanelle, has rapidly become one of the most exciting races of the entire week as a multitude of speedy 3YOs do battle for Gr.1 glory in a race that was first run back in 2015.
A narrow winner of the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last season over five furlongs, where he beat Go Bears Go by a head, Perfect Power then went on to excel in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville before he ended his juvenile campaign with a sparkling win in the Middle Park Stakes. A classy winner of the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on his first start this season over seven furlongs, Richard Fahey's son of Ardad was then sent to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas, but he failed to see out the mile trip as he finished a creditable seventh of 15.
Now set to return to sprint trips, Perfect Power can well and truly outclass his rivals in this contest, as he has shown a sparkling turn of foot at the business end of a race, and while the likes of the aforementioned Go Bears Go, El Caballo and Twilight Jet could prove to be notable rivals, he can prove to be a real cut above and looks a cracking price to land another Group prize.
"he's a high-class horse and we'll find out just how good he is on Saturday. This race will tell us whether he's a Commonwealth or Jersey horse, but I'll be disappointed if we're not going for the Commonwealth," saidEl Caballo's handler Karl Burke who posted a career-best total of 100 winners in 2021 and sits on 36 wins for the current season after a strong start.
This Group 1 contest will require a bit of a step up from Go Bears Go this time out but he’s certainly capable as the 3YO has already proved himself placing in Group One company.
His fourth place at favourite last time out at Haydock can be taken with a pinch of salt as the jockey Rossa Ryan reported he stumbled badly at the start and had to make up ground from the offset.
Given the stumble and running on in the final furlong to only finish a couple of lengths behind, he should be considered to go one better at a course he likes and reverse the form from some of those he finished behind at Haydock.
