The 2010 Emirates Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner Americain has been euthanized after suffering a leg injury as a result of a paddock accident in country Victoria, Australia.
The 17YO, who was initially trained by Andre Fabre in France, before joining Alain de Royer Dupre in 2012 to embark on his successful cup campaign, spent nine seasons at stud before being pensioned last year.
Americain, bred by Wertheimer & Frere and out of the Gr. 2-winning Arazi mare America, was purchased by agent Rob Roulston more than a decade ago for Australian owners, including Gerry Ryan and Kevin and Colleen Bamford. The horse delivered them the country's biggest race, the Melbourne Cup under jockey Gerald Mosse.
The globe-trotting son of Dynaformer captured 11 of 34 stars in his career and amassed more than $5.7 million in earnings. In addition to the Melbourne Cup, he captured four group events in the U.K., Hong Kong, Australia, and France and placed three other times in group 1 company.
During his stallion career, which started at Adam Sangster's Swettenham Stud, Americain sired two stakes winners, one in Australia and one in the U.S. He later was moved to Bamfords' Daisy Hill at Doreen in Victoria.
