Dan Morton, who trainers the odds-on favourite Alaskan God, was pleased with his draw in barrier 14 for Saturday's Gr.1 Railway Stakes at Ascot. If the two emergencies drawn inside him don't start, he will move up to post position 12.
Morton would prefer that stall rather than a spot right up to the fence for Chris Parnham to ride their son of Playing God.
He's a big, rangy horse who needs to be in a moving line, and he should have that chance from where he's drawn, according to Morton.
I believe Chris would accept the draw with little complaint. Where he has to be, we'll want to form a moving line three deep with cover.
The 4YO will be making just his eighth career start in the Railway, carrying 53 kilogrammes, and is coming off only his second career defeat following a first-up sixth placing in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes, where he was still in last place at the 150 metres.
In his last campaign, Alaskan God made five starts and won them all, including the Gr.2 Western Australian Derby (2400m).
When asked how Alaskan God would perform over the Railway distance, Morton replied, "He sems to be effective over most voyages, but I'm cognizant he's probably better off over further."
I think we've got him relatively fit for the event, but at this level that's probably as short as he wants to go.
