After winning the Queensland Group One last month, trainer Rob Heathcote has decided not to continue Rothfire's Western Australian campaign in the lucrative Gold Rush in Perth next month. With his fifth-place finish in Saturday's Gr.1 Winterbottom Stakes, he will be returning to Queensland later this week.
We're taking the prudent course of action and spelling him after he experienced the really firm track on Saturday.
Since this is the case, Rothfire won't be able to enjoy any of Queensland's summer attractions either.
It's the climax of a long spring carnival that began in September, when he won the Gr.2 McEwen Stakes at The Valley, defeating Coolangatta, who went on to win the Group One.
After finishing second in the Gr.1 Manikato Stakes to the dominant Bella Nipotina, Rothfire's owners took home A$360,000.
