On November 29 in England, at the age of 21, Ouija Board passed away, a report in Thoroughbred Daily News states. She was a two-time champion grass mare in North America.
Ouija Board, a son of Cape Cross and a daughter of Welsh Pageant's Selection Board, won ten races, nine of which were stakes, and brought in a total of $6,312,552. She took first place in both the 2004 VO5 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and the 2006 Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, finishing runner-up in 2005.
In addition to winning two Eclipse Awards, Ouija Board won the European Championship for 3-year-old fillies in 2004, the European Championship for Older Horses in 2006, and the European Championship for Horse of the Year in 2004 and 2006.
Ouija Board was owned and bred by Lord Derby of the Stanley Estate and Stud, who said as much to TDN "We never would have dreamed that one of our horses would break a world record and provide so much joy to so many people around the world. She had the finest personality and was always in a great mood. Every time we strolled around the stallion, she looked forward to a hug and a polo mint. We count ourselves as extremely fortunate to have known her; she brightened our lives in immeasurable ways. Forever grateful for the laughter and joy she brought us over the course of four years, we set off around the world."
With Ed Dunlop as her trainer, Ouija Board went 10-3-5 in 22 races. Several further Gr.1 races were won by her as well as the Breeders' Cup. At the age of three, she swept both the 2004 Gr.1 Darley Irish Oaks and the 2004 Vodafone Epsom Oaks (G1), closing up her breakthrough year with a victory in the Breeders' Cup. Five years later, she took home the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase. Before retiring from racing, Ouija Board won the Gr.1 Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes in her final year.
