White Abarrio, the commanding victor of the 2023 Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Classic, has returned to serious work at Gulfstream Park, completing his first breeze since his spectacular comeback last month. The grey powerhouse, under the guidance of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr, clocked three furlongs in 37 seconds on December 8.
The son of Race Day is being primed for the US$3 million Gr.1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational on January 25, with connections opting for an intriguing preparation route. Rather than tackle the Gr.3 Harlan's Holiday over 1 1/16 miles, Joseph has targeted the seven-furlong Gr.3 Mr. Prospector on December 28.
"That kind of brought him back in form last year—the seven-furlong allowance and the one-turn Met Mile," Joseph explained. "It's a similar thing. Two one-turn races back into a two-turn race. It worked last year."
The 5YO, whose ownership comprises C2 Racing Stable LLC, Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, and Antonio Pagnano, boasts an impressive record at the Florida venue. His previous triumphs include the US$1 million Gr.1 Curlin Florida Derby in 2022, whilst his recent comeback saw him dominate a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance by 10 1/4 lengths.
The race's illustrious honour roll includes Arrogate (2017), who went on to land the Dubai World Cup, and City of Light (2019), who retired to stud after his victory. Last year's winner Art Collector had previously captured the Gr.1 Woodward Stakes.
White Abarrio's recent form surge, following disappointing runs in the Gr.1 Saudi Cup and Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap, culminated in landmark victories in the Gr.1 Whitney and the Breeders' Cup Classic for former trainer Richard Dutrow.
