Godolphin picked up their first win of the Dubai World Cup evening, the 3YO son of Dubawi US$750,000 UAE Derby for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, who were landing the Classic for the first time.
Charlie Appleby admitted talk of a possible tilt at the Kentucky Derby next was "a nice conversation to be having" after Rebel’s Romance put his first career defeat in Saudi Arabia behind him in the best possible fashion and looks set to be a horse who will write many more headlines in 2021.
Although the 100 points for the victory would ensure a spot in the Louisville starting gate, Appleby wasn't to be pinned down as to plans for Rebel's Romance.
"That's a conversation we can have in the next week or 10 days," Appleby said. "Godolphin already has a horse that looks good in that race. Our primary task will be to work backwards now from next year's Dubai World Cup."
Panadol, a New York-bred Flatter colt, earned 40 Kentucky Derby points while suffering his first defeat after winning his first two starts, both at Meydan. He won the Al Bastakiya, the Super Saturday prep for this race, in the most recent.
Rebel’s Romance impressively came off the pace to reel in the front-running Panadol and draw an impressive five and a half lengths clear as they flashed past the winning post. New Treasurewith Frankie Dettori up, finished third—the same slot he filled in the Saudi Derby.
Rebel’s Romance had won both his starts in Britain on the all-weather surfaces at Newcastle and then Kempton late last year before beginning a lucrative campaign by winning the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial at Meydan back in January.
