The 2024 Dubai Golden Shaheen witnessed a seismic shift in the world of horse racing as Tuz, a resilient gelding under the expert tutelage of trainer Bhupat Seemar, surged to a remarkable victory.
In a narrative reminiscent of David and Goliath, Tuz's triumph avenged Switzerland's narrow defeat from the previous year and etched his name on the billboard of racing history.
Two years following his remarkable achievement of training Switzerland to victory in the US$2 million Dubai Gr.1 Golden Shaheen during his debut season at the renowned Zabeel Stables, trainer Bhupat Seemar worked his magic once again by guiding Tuz to an unexpected triumph in the six-furlong contest.
Guided with unwavering assurance by 11-time UAE Champion jockey Tadhg O'Shea, the 7YO offspring of Darley's esteemed stallion Dubawi exhibited a burst of speed along the inside rail, demonstrating unparalleled determination and resolve.
Japan's Don Frankie and big-race jockey Christian Demuoro in the irons chased the winner home with American raider Nakatomi, a battling third for former British champion jockey Jamie Spencer.
Favorite Sibelius, hoping to repeat his last year's heroics, never got into a rhythm and could only finish eleventh of 14.
From Modest Origins To International Acclaim
The son of Oxbow’s ascent from humble origins to the pinnacle of racing excellence serves as a poignant reminder of the boundless potential within every racehorse. Born in Russia and initiated into racing at the Pyatigorsk Hippodrome, the entire’s early performances hinted at a latent talent waiting to be unleashed. Despite being acquired for a modest sum of US$7,000 at the Keeneland September sale in 2018, Tuz's trajectory changed dramatically under the astute guidance of trainer Bhupat Seemar.
Seemar, renowned for his ability to discern hidden potential, recognised the 7YO gelding’s innate speed and indomitable spirit. Despite a setback in the Gr.3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint, he remained steadfast in his belief in his capabilities, drawing parallels to the near miss with Switzerland in the previous year's Dubai Golden Shaheen. This unwavering faith laid the foundation for Tuz's eventual triumph, proving that with the proper guidance and determination, even the most unassuming of horses can ascend to greatness.
"He possesses tremendous natural speed; it's his greatest asset," remarked Bhupat Seemar, the winning trainer. "Tuz has always displayed remarkable swiftness, reminiscent of Switzerland's racing style. Despite a disappointing outing in Saudi Arabia, I remained confident in Tuz's potential. Sprinters evolve and mature, knowing precisely how to excel in their races."
Seemar was overwhelmed with joy and added, "This is what we work for all season. So, this one is for all the team members who put in the hard work that sometimes goes unnoticed."
Tadhg O'Shea, the winning jockey, concurred with Seemar's assessment, emphasizing Tuz's innate speed and tenacity. The eleven-time UAE champion jockey discovers a compatible ally in Tuz, echoing the stable's previous triumphs with Switzerland in 2022.
"His speed is unparalleled," O'Shea affirmed. "From the outset, Tuz demonstrated remarkable agility and determination, reminiscent of Switzerland's racing prowess. Despite facing challenges, he maintained his resolve and surged ahead. It was an honour to ride such a magnificent horse to victory."
"He had to be good and challenging, but I had a willing partner. As we straightened for home, I gave him a squeeze, and when he got a rail to shoot at, he was very, very good.
"We knew he had the talent; it was just about him expressing it, and he did today," added O'Shea. We don't get many opportunities to ride in Group 1 races—there are just 10 to 15 in a season—so to win one of them on the big night is very, very special. The first win with Switzerland was special, but this one means the world to me," he exclaimed.
The Dubai Golden Shaheen unfolded as a gripping spectacle of speed, strategy, and sheer determination. Jockey Tadhg O'Shea, entrusted with the reins of Tuz, exhibited unparalleled tactical acumen as he steered his charge towards victory. Despite securing advantageous gate number two, O'Shea knew victory would require more than mere positioning. As the starting gates flung open and the thundering hooves of the contenders reverberated across the track, O'Shea meticulously navigated Tuz along the rail, capitalising on a fleeting opportunity in the straight.
It was a moment of audacity and brilliance as O'Shea expertly guided Tuz through a narrow gap, unleashing a devastating finishing kick that left his rivals in his wake.
As O'Shea later recounted, "He's swift. We had a great gate number [two], but we were getting pressured a long way out. He had to be good and tough. There wasn't much room to manoeuvre on the inside, but I had a good, willing partner. He's a big horse. When he straightened up, he went through the eye of a needle. On the home turn, I was a length down off Cristian [Demuro]. I gave [Tuz] a squeeze, and the response was immediate. He's a high-class horse, and when he gets a rail to shoot at, he's very, very, very good."
The seamless synergy between jockey and horse was a sight to behold, underscoring the pivotal role of trust and understanding in achieving racing glory.
Tuz's victory reverberated far beyond the confines of the Meydan Racecourse, sending shockwaves through the racing world. His triumph symbolised the triumph of the underdog, inspiring aspiring trainers, owners, and racing enthusiasts worldwide. It was a potent reminder that success is not determined by pedigree or past performance but by the relentless pursuit of excellence and an unwavering belief in one's abilities.
Tuz's triumph in the Dubai Golden Shaheen solidified his status as a racing legend, etching his name alongside the illustrious champions of the past. His story served as a beacon of hope for aspiring racehorses, a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering determination.
Despite securing second place, jockey Cristian Demuro graciously praised Don Frankie's performance and acknowledged Tuz as a formidable adversary.
Demuro emphasised, "He ran admirably and put in a valiant effort. An exceptional horse bested us."
Reflecting on the hurdles encountered during the race, jockey Jamie Spencer, aboard Nakatomi, who finished third, highlighted the fiercely competitive nature of the event.
Spencer lamented, "The horse-drawn nine, Hopkins, dashed my hopes when he cut across me after just 50 meters, costing me any chance of clinching victory. Despite the setback, Nakatomi displayed remarkable resilience to secure our position. He performed admirably to achieve the result we attained."
As the racing world eagerly anticipates Tuz's next chapter, speculation about the challenges and opportunities ahead runs rife. Will Tuz continue to dominate the prestigious dirt sprints of the Middle East, or will he set his sights on international competitions, testing his mettle against the world's best? The possibilities are as tantalising as they are endless, and fans worldwide await with bated breath to witness the next chapter in Tuz's illustrious racing career.
Tuz's Dubai Golden Shaheen victory is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance against all odds. As Tuz embarks on his next journey, his legacy as a champion sprinter is secure, and his legend has only just begun.
