Giga Kick is setting his sights on a historic second victory in The Everest, as connections aim to join the elite company of dual winners in Australia's richest race.
The Clayton Douglas-trained 5YO has secured the Australian Turf Club's slot for the US$14 million (£11.4m) showpiece at Royal Randwick on October 19. Owner Jonathan Munz struck a deal from New York, confirming the gelding's participation in the 1200m sprint.
Champion jockey James McDonald, who partnered Giga Kick in a recent Canterbury barrier trial, was effusive in his praise. "He's ready to explode," McDonald declared, setting the stage for a potentially breathtaking display in Saturday's Gr.2 Premiere Stakes.
Douglas, speaking from his Mornington base, outlined the meticulous preparation for The Everest. "We've always planned for him to peak on the big day," the young trainer explained. "Saturday's run will put the finishing touches on his condition."
Giga Kick's return to the track last month saw him finish fifth in the Concorde Stakes, following a lengthy spell due to a hip injury. However, his recent trial win has instilled confidence in the camp.
The son of Scissor Kick etched his name in Everest folklore with a stunning victory in 2022, joining an illustrious list of winners. Redzel remains the only dual victor, having claimed the inaugural running in 2017 before successfully defending his crown in 2018. Other notable winners include Yes Yes Yes (2019), who went on to stand at stud, and Nature Strip (2021), who later triumphed in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Munz, speaking from across the Atlantic, exuded confidence in his charge. "We've got unfinished business in The Everest," he asserted. "Giga Kick's been aimed at this race all along, and I'm expecting a strong showing on Saturday."
As the countdown to The Everest intensifies, all eyes will be on Royal Randwick this weekend. Giga Kick's performance in the Premiere Stakes will provide crucial insight into his chances of joining the pantheon of multiple Everest winners.
With the stage set for a thrilling contest, Australian racing fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be another exhilarating renewal of The Everest.
