Southport Tycoon is bypassing the Silver Eagle in favour of Saturday's Gr.3 Sydney Stakes (1200m) at Randwick. Connections, after careful deliberation on Monday, have chosen the US$1.3 million contest over the Silver Eagle, where the colt was pre-post favourite.
The dual Group One winner, unable to secure an Everest slot, is currently third emergency behind Overpass and Think About It. His trainer, Ciaron Maher, is no stranger to success in this race, having claimed victory last year with I Am Me.
Mark Zahra, previously committed to either race on Saturday, is now set to partner Giga Kick in the Everest. Meanwhile, Bennett confirmed that the Golden Eagle (1500m) on 2 November remains the target for Southport Tycoon, while plans for the Japan trip later in the year for the Invitational Mile Championship have been shelved.
The Sydney Stakes has a rich history of producing top-class sprinters. Notable previous winners include Standout (2020), who went on to place in multiple Group One races, and Deprive (2019), who later claimed victory in the Gr.2 Tab Premiere Stakes.
Bennett exuded confidence ahead of the weekend, stating, "He is in a very good place... Ciaron says the horse is airborne." This optimism stems from Southport Tycoon's recent trackwork, where he impressed alongside Growing Empire, reminiscent of his dominant performance in the Manikato Stakes.
The talented colt has been turning heads since his debut. His dual Group One victories, including a memorable triumph in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, have cemented his status as one of Australia's most exciting sprinters. His versatility and raw speed have made him a force to be reckoned with on the turf.
While the Sydney Stakes may not have the same prestige as The Everest, it has proven to be an excellent platform for horses to showcase their abilities. The race often attracts a high-quality field, with many runners using it as a springboard to success in more prestigious events later in the season.
As Southport Tycoon prepares for his Sydney Stakes challenge, all eyes will be on Randwick this Saturday. With his impressive track record and the confidence of his connections, the stage is set for another thrilling performance from this rising star of Australian racing.
