Bjorn Baker believes an “announcement is imminent” regarding Overpass securing a slot for The Everest at Randwick on October 15.
Speaking during Monday’s 2YO barrier trials at Randwick, Baker indicated that a decision was likely be the end of the week.
With six slot holder still yet to announce their contender, speculation is that it is a decision between James Harron Bloodstock and James Kennedy.
The four-year-old finished a gallant runner-up to Chris Waller’s superstar Nature Strip in the Shorts on Saturday, with Baker now excited about his chances for the $15 million sprint.
“I thought he was ready to run a good race, and he’s well set-up to go forward after that,” Baker told Sky Racing.
“Obviously, we see The Everest as our main aim. I think an announcement will probably be imminent.
“It’s very exciting.”
Baker praised the tenacity of Overpass on the straight in the Shorts, finishing just under 1 ½ lengths behind the best short-distance horse in the world.
“He had to do a little bit of work from the start, and I thought he was strong at the line,” Baker said.
“I think 1200 will suit him. On top of the ground he’ll be better for it.
“Going forward, he’s given us confidence.”
Baker – a larger-than-life character on the Sydney racing scene – had this to say for the potential slot owners of Overpass ahead of the world’s richest race on turf.
“If you’ve locked him in well done and it’ll be a pleasure doing business with you,” he said with a smile.
Overpass did pull up with 2/5 lameness in his near hindleg, but he is expected to make a full and quick recovery.
Jockey Rachel King was delighted with the effort of her mount after the Group 2 feature over 1100m, and also thinks he is now primed for another good performance in The Everest.
“Huge first-up run – 1200 will be perfect for him,” she said.
