Sourced by Sean Driver’s Kurrinda Bloodstock, Private Harry had tongues wagging the moment he stepped out at official trials initially, but Nathan Doyle reveals that after his return from two months, Private Harry has made the physical transformation that underpins his aspirations as both a AU$20?million sprint spectacular champion but also as potential as a top-class stallion.
"I feel he's really grown up and strengthened since the break. He's done a terrific job with that progression from a maiden all the way up to Queensland to win The Sunshine Coast Guineas and onto a Group One. He's only going to get better with racing, and I feel he's come back much more mature as a horse, which is fantastic," Doyle explains.
"Private Harry has probably put on 60kg and looks absolutely outstanding. He had a five-week spell and then spent three weeks at Limitless Lodge, doing some dressage work. He has really made that physical development you would expect of a young horse," Driver says.
Doyle's understanding that elite performance demands meticulous preparation has produced a colt whose physical presence now matches his racing ability. Strategic spelling, specialised dressage work, and careful monitoring have delivered impressive results.
The Au$8 Million Partnership
Following his breakthrough Galaxy victory at Rosehill, Private Harry became the subject of intense interest from leading studs, with Yulong ultimately outbidding rivals including Newgate Farm. The deal secured Private Harry's path to the elite Group?One curtain?raiser of Randwick, where he'll represent Yulong's AU$20 million slot before eventually joining their stallion roster alongside Written Tycoon and other premier sires.
The sale represents a huge windfall for the colt's band of 19 mainly small-time owners, who bought into the son of Darley shuttler Harry Angel after Kurrinda purchased him with Doyle for just AU$115,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale in 2023. He is out of the winning Congrats mare, Happy Pilgrim.
Doyle's involvement in the original selection process alongside Driver demonstrates his eye for spotting talent early. "Sean and I selected him at the sales. We were on the same page and both liked the horse. And we have got the results here," he said.
"He's got good value there, and they showed interest after he won The Galaxy. They had us near The TAB Everest. They wanted him in their spot as soon as they could secure 50% of him through the sale. So that's how that transpired," Doyle reveals.
The agreement includes a loyalty clause ensuring Private Harry remains with trainer Nathan Doyle for life, reflecting the strong relationships underpinning his success. For his original ownership group, the windfall transforms their racing investment into life-changing returns, while Yulong gains a potential future stallion with proven Group One credentials.
"I think that was probably the defining moment that he's the real deal when he took on already Group One level horses at set weights and showed that he's well and truly up to Group One class," Nathan Doyle reflects on Private Harry's breakthrough performance in The Sunlight at Sunshine Coast.

Ideally, I'd like to go third in the race with him. I believe he improved after The Galaxy compared to before. He's a large colt, and The Galaxy helped firm him up. It would be perfect to have him fully fit by the third up. He would be just coming off 1100m into 1200m, and then into The Gr.1 The TAB Everest (also 1200m) would be the perfect plan," Doyle explains his approach, defined by his intimate knowledge of his entire profile.
The partnership with jockey Ash Morgan remains central to the preparation strategy. Doyle's loyalty to his stable rider reflects personal friendship and professional pragmatism. "He knows the horse, they've got a good association. Why change something that's not broken?"
Doyle acknowledges that the mental aspects have been equally crucial in Private Harry's development. "I suppose he got better mentally with that first race back in preparation, and that has probably brought him on as well. I feel he's just really strengthened. He's matured into a proper horse, as we knew he would. He's seamless to train. He loves his work and is a good eater, making our job easy."
International & Domestic Ambitions
Private Harry's trajectory extends far beyond domestic competition, with Royal Ascot representing an important test of his international credentials. Doyle's cautious yet optimistic approach to future planning demonstrates the balance required when managing a horse of such potential.
"They'd love to take him through Royal Ascot next year, so that could be on the cards. But we'll get through this preparation and The TAB Everest, and then we'll know more about him," Doyle acknowledges, maintaining realistic expectations.

While the Russell Balding Stakes presents an unparalleled domestic opportunity, Doyle acknowledges the sprint bonus incentives. "There's a big lure of a sprinting bonus. It’s always sitting there if he comes through the AU$20?million sprint spectacular well." The colt has already secured AU$1,963,275 in career earnings with a potential for much more before the end of the year.
A True Partnership Defined In Racing Colours
The driver outlines the collaborative approach. "Private Harry will stay in our colours for The Shorts and the Premiere in spring. Then Yulong and I will create a hybrid set of silks for The TAB Everest, but the horse will be back in our colours after that," he confirmed.
The arrangement extends beyond the A$20m marquee sprint of the Spring Carnival, with Royal Ascot 2026 representing the partnership's international ambitions. "If Private Harry is fit and healthy, and all things being equal, we hope to go to Royal Ascot next year where he will wear Yulong's colours," Driver adds.
Looking ahead beyond the elite Group?1 curtain?raiser of Randwick, Doyle maintains his methodical approach to campaign planning. "We'll get through this one first. You've put the cart before the horse. Just get through this preparation and see where it sits. They'd also love to take him through Royal Ascot next year, so that could be on the cards. But we'll get through this preparation and The Gr.1 The Everest, and then we'll know more about him," he states.
From Mentorship to Mastery: Building on the Past While Shaping the Future
For Doyle, the journey from humble beginnings to the headline attraction of Everest Carnival contention carries profound personal significance. "It means so much. I think it's so much more rewarding, too. It was tough early on when you probably had to make yourself from nothing. The hard work made it more worthwhile," he reflects.
While reflecting on his career, he said, "I worked for trainers Peter Snowden and Mark Newnham, who were great mentors to me. Seeing what they did and working for them inspired me. I also want to compete at that level and do what they do. So, I suppose that's what drove me along the way.”
Doyle reveals promising prospects ahead with other prominent stable stars. We've got a few quality horses. Harlem Queen will return and be aimed at some mares' races. She's in Group One. She had a minor setback in her last race in Queensland, so we'll give her some time off.
The 3YO daughter of Brutal finished runner-up in the Gr.1 Flight Stakes last year and third behind Lekvarte in the Gr.2 ATC Emancipation Stakes (2025).
Churchill's Choice will also be set for some mares' Group races over the autumn,” says Doyle of his Churchill 3YO. The colt was runner-up in the Gr.2 EF Queensland Guineas earlier this year.
“We've also got a lot of nice young horses coming through soon," he reveals.
