Archivist Earns Bahrain International Trophy Invite

Wathnan's Archivist Impresses At York

Archivist secured his place in the Gr.1 Bahrain International Trophy with a seven-length victory in the Gr.3 Strensall Stakes on the final day of York's Ebor Festival on Saturday, 22 August 2026. The win, delivered for Wathnan Racing, earned the Hamad Al Jehani-trained gelding an automatic invitation to the November feature, now raced at Group One level for the first time and worth US$1.5 million.

Sent forward under jockey Callum Rodriguez, Archivist travelled strongly through the race and drew clear of his field approaching the line, producing what connections described as the best performance of his career to date. The margin of victory carried extra significance given James Doyle, Wathnan Racing's retained rider, had chosen to partner Damysus elsewhere on the same card rather than take the ride on Archivist, a decision that made the winning display all the more striking for the team.

The Gr.3 Strensall Stakes was run over 1800 metres (nine furlongs) at York, where Archivist, a 4YO gelding, defeated 10 rivals by seven lengths under Rodriguez. Saber Strike, carrying the colours of Victorius Forever, finished second, while Persica, who contested the 2025 running of the Bahrain International Trophy, came home third.

Rodriguez Hails A Career-Best Run

Speaking to the press, Rodriguez said Archivist had felt like a much-improved horse and had surprised him with how relaxed he was throughout the contest, given the gelding had previously shown a naturally forward-going attitude in his races. Rodriguez explained that, anticipating a strong gallop developing in front of him, he ended up asking Archivist for his effort earlier than he had originally intended, simply because of how well the horse was travelling beneath him through the race.

Richard Brown, speaking on behalf of Wathnan Racing, said connections had gone into the race believing Archivist had a big chance, while acknowledging that Doyle had faced a difficult decision in choosing not to ride him. Even so, Brown said the manner of the victory had taken the whole team slightly by surprise. He credited York's long home straight, and the presence of a bend earlier in the race, with helping Archivist settle into a rhythm and relax into his contest, adding that the gelding had travelled into the race with real authority. Brown said the performance now left connections able to be bold with Archivist's future targets, pointing towards "a big step up in class."

Wathnan Eyes A Step Up In Class

The Strensall Stakes is one of only three races worldwide that carry an automatic invitation to the Bahrain International Trophy for their winner, alongside the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes and the Gr.2 Sapporo Kinen in Japan. Should Archivist take up his place, he would be following the same path as Spirit Dancer, who used Strensall Stakes success as a springboard to two separate victories in the Bahrain International Trophy.

Run over 2000 metres (10 furlongs) at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, this year's Bahrain International Trophy takes place on Friday, 13 November 2026, marking its first renewal as a Group One contest and lifting its total value to US$1.5 million. Entries for the race close on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, leaving connections a five-week window in which to decide whether Archivist will take up the invitation earned with his emphatic Strensall Stakes win at York.
