Blue Bolt matched Scandinavia's unbeaten record with victory in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday 12 September 2026, a result that followed wins earlier in the year in the Falmouth Stakes and the Prix Rothschild. The Juddmonte-owned filly, a daughter of Blue Point trained by Andrew Balding, had already established herself as the season's leading older mare before the Irish Champions Festival, and her Leopardstown success moved her into a share of third in the overall Cartier Horse of the Year points on 112.
That total also keeps Blue Bolt clear at the top of the Cartier Older Horse standings, ahead of her fellow Andrew Balding-trained, Juddmonte-owned rival Kalpana, who sits on 96 points. Daryz has advanced his own claims in the same division with a win in the Prix Foy, moving to 92 points, while Notable Speech has done likewise following victory in the Woodbine Mile, taking him to 88. Retirement Leaves Points Unsettled
Bow Echo's shock retirement last month has left the Cartier Horse of the Year picture in an unusual position: the leading points-scorer will not race again this season, yet his total remains out of reach for now. The unbeaten colt's total of 128 points, built before his retirement, continues to head both the overall standings and the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt division, and none of his main rivals in that division have been able to fully capitalise on his absence in the weeks since.
With Bow Echo unable to add to his score, the remaining weeks of the European season effectively become a contest between Scandinavia and Blue Bolt for second place, and, depending on how the points continue to accumulate, a potential late run at the overall total he leaves behind. Both horses have further engagements before the campaign concludes, and their connections will be aware that every additional Pattern race win between now and November narrows a gap that, for the moment, still favours a horse who has already left the racecourse for good.
The Cartier Racing Awards panel will finalise all divisional totals before the November ceremony, at which point Bow Echo's position — secured before his retirement rather than defended since — will be tested against whatever Scandinavia and Blue Bolt can still add between now and the end of the European turf season.
