Gold Cup Timeline Uncertain After Sovereignty Setback
Abscess Rules Out Scheduled Work
Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year, has developed an abscess in a hind foot and will miss a scheduled work this weekend, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said on Friday, 4 September 2026. Whether the setback threatens his next intended start, the US$1,000,000 Gr.1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on 18 September 2026, remains unclear.
The 4YO colt, trained by Bill Mott for Godolphin, has won seven of 12 career starts, including one win, one second and one third from three starts in 2026. His last outing came in the Gr.1 Whitney Stakes on 8 August 2026, a race he won. He galloped at the Oklahoma Training Track on Friday morning before the abscess was discovered.
Mott addressed the situation directly in the Saratoga paddock on Friday, declining to speculate on the Gold Cup’s status. “I could not comment on that one way or another,” Mott told the TDN.
The trainer was clear about the timeline and the reasoning behind pulling Sovereignty from scheduled training. “We decided this morning that he was not going to work this weekend,” Mott said. “We’re not trying to cover anything up. The horse has an issue with the hind foot, and we have to see if we can get it cleared up over the weekend. He will miss a work.”
Mott said the resolution time for a foot abscess is difficult to predict, drawing on his decades of training experience across multiple generations of horses. “Everyone is an individual,” he said, declining to offer a firm timeline for when Sovereignty might return to the work tab at Saratoga Springs.
Mott Recalls 2025 Breeders’ Cup Scare
Should Sovereignty work by next weekend, he could potentially still make the Jockey Club Gold Cup, though the trainer confirmed he will miss several days of training regardless of how quickly the abscess clears. “Am I worried? I am concerned every minute of the day,” Mott said.
The abscess arrives with an echo of Sovereignty’s setback late in the 2025 season, when a spiked fever forced him from the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic days before the race at Del Mar. Mott described that episode at the time, saying the colt “spiked another fever, even though he’d had some medication in him from six o’clock Tuesday morning,” before adding that he “re-spiked another fever, and of course, now, he’s on antibiotics.” Both episodes arrived in the days before a major target race, with Mott again declining to commit to firm answers while the colt’s condition was monitored, a similarly cautious approach to the one he has taken with the current hind foot issue.
The Jockey Club Gold Cup carries added significance in 2026 as the race christening the reopening of Belmont Park, rebuilt at a cost of US$455 million over three years with funding approved through New York’s FY2024 enacted budget. Forever Young Also Eyes Gold Cup
Organisers had been anticipating a showdown between Sovereignty and Japanese champion Forever Young (Jpn), who is using the Gold Cup as a final prep before defending his title in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic on 31 October 2026 at Keeneland. Forever Young enters the race off more than US$31.7 million in career purse earnings and honours as the Japan Racing Association’s Best Older Male Horse and Best Dirt Horse for 2025.
Sovereignty’s 2025 campaign carried him to victories in the Gr.1 Kentucky Derby, Gr.1 Belmont Stakes, Gr.1 Travers Stakes, Gr.1 Jim Dandy Stakes and Gr.1 Fountain of Youth Stakes, with his sole defeat that year coming behind Tappan Street in the Gr.1 Florida Derby. The form underpinned his selection as American Horse of the Year and American Champion 3-Year-Old Male at the Eclipse Awards in January 2026.
Jockey Junior Alvarado partnered Sovereignty for his Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes wins in 2025, part of a partnership that has carried the Into Mischief colt through the bulk of his graded stakes campaign. Godolphin bred the colt, out of the Bernardini mare Crowned, foaled 22 February 2022 in Kentucky.
