Item And Blue Bolt Head To Ireland
Juddmonte's Item will join fellow Balding-trained runner Blue Bolt (Blue Point) on the journey to Ireland for the Irish Champions Festival, trainer Andrew Balding confirmed on 3 September 2026. The son of Frankel is aimed at the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes on 12 September 2026, while Blue Bolt, successful in the Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Rothschild, targets the Gr.1 Matron Stakes on the same card.
Item, a homebred colt out of the Group One-winning mare Capla Temptress, has won five of his six starts, his only defeat coming when unplaced in the Gr.1 Derby at Epsom in June 2026. He followed that run with victory in the Gr.2 York Stakes in July and then claimed his first Group One prize in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York on 19 August 2026, beating Almaqam by a head with Constitution River and Ombudsman back in third and fourth.
Item Targets Irish Champion Stakes
Balding told the Press Association he was pleased with both runners ahead of their trip. “I'm very happy with both Item and Blue Bolt and I'm hoping they will both go to Leopardstown,” he said. “The Arc is still in the picture for Item, but he wouldn't want to go a mile and a half on soft ground, that's for sure. He'll go to Ireland and then see.”
The Juddmonte International win carried extra resonance for the operation, arriving 14 years after Frankel himself won the same race in 2012, this time with Item racing in the family's own silks. Timeform responded by raising the colt's rating from 123p to 128p, making him the highest-rated three-year-old in training, one pound clear of Constitution River. That rise reflects how emphatically Item has franked the form of his York success since stepping up to Group One company.
Item is out of Capla Temptress, a stakes-winning mare by Lope De Vega, and is a half-brother to stakes winner Temptable. He is the second stakes winner among three winners from three foals out of the mare, with the 2026 Irish Derby winner Benvenuto Cellini — also by Frankel, out of a different mare — sharing the same sire line.
Kalpana Eyes Arc And Ascot Targets
Balding's other major autumn player from the Juddmonte string is Kalpana, the Study Of Man mare who beat Calandagan and Benvenuto Cellini in the Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on 25 July 2026, having been runner-up to Calandagan in the same race twelve months earlier. She followed that with a photo-finish success in the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks on 20 August 2026, her fourth Group One win.
Kalpana is not part of the Irish Champions Festival plan. Balding said she has two autumn targets under consideration. “Kalpana has two autumn targets that we're considering, but we will know more nearer the time. Obviously they are the Arc and Ascot,” he said, pointing to the Gr.1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and a title defence in the Gr.1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.
Blue Bolt, bought for €400,000 (US$464,000) as a yearling at the Arqana August Sale, has won seven of ten career starts, most recently doubling up in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket and the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on 2 August 2026, beating Precise both times. Balding has praised her physical scope as a filly. “She's got great physical strength for a filly, and that's her biggest quality,” he said.
Andrew Balding trains from Kingsclere, the stable built by his father Ian Balding, who trained Mill Reef to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the same yard. That family history gives added context to Item's own victory in the race's later Juddmonte International guise, run down the same gallops that shaped Mill Reef more than five decades earlier.
With the Irish Champion Stakes still to come, the Arc remains a live target for Item depending on ground conditions in early October 2026. Balding's comments suggest that call is unlikely to firm up until after Leopardstown has been run and its outcome assessed. Blue Bolt, meanwhile, steps up in distance and grade against the older Matron Stakes field on the same afternoon, carrying her Falmouth and Rothschild form into the toughest test of her career to date.
The Irish Champions Festival runs across Leopardstown and the Curragh, with the Irish Champion Stakes and Matron Stakes both scheduled for 12 September 2026. Juddmonte's dual assault gives Balding two runners with strong claims for one of the European season's remaining marquee cards.
