An Injury Ends A Championship Bid

Canada's Michael Winter and El Mundo have been withdrawn from the eventing World Championships at Aachen, which run from 11 to 23 August 2026, after the 17YO gelding sustained an injury during his final preparations.

A statement from Equestrian Canada, issued on 4 August 2026, confirmed El Mundo would be given time to recover, leaving Jessica Phoenix and her five-star campaigner Fluorescent Adolescent — five-star being the highest level of eventing competition — as Canada's sole eventing combination at the championships.
Winter, a three-time Olympian who has competed at multiple five-star events, had partnered El Mundo at the previous World Championships in Pratoni and at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and the pair helped Canada to team gold at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

Horse Welfare Placed Above Selection

“The care and wellbeing of Roberto, and of all our equine partners, is paramount,” said Winter, who owns the horse alongside his wife Emma Winter and Jonathan Nelson. Winter expanded on the decision in a statement issued through Equestrian Canada, framing the withdrawal as consistent with the horse's long-term interests rather than the short-term goal of the championships.
“The most important thing is that Roberto is here at home, being well cared for. Not because of what he has done for us, or what he may still do, but because he is a valued partner entrusted to our care,” he said. “We have a responsibility to make the best decisions we can for him, always with his long-term welfare at heart and with the goal of creating the best possible outcomes throughout his career and his life.” The withdrawal follows a similar pattern seen elsewhere in the sport this season, with several established campaigners across nations opting to prioritise horse welfare over championship appearances in the build-up to Aachen.

Phoenix Now Carries Canada Alone

With Winter and El Mundo's withdrawal, Phoenix and Fluorescent Adolescent now carry Canada's eventing hopes alone at Aachen. The skewbald five-star campaigner has established himself as one of the country's leading horses in recent seasons, and his run at the championships takes on added significance in the absence of Winter's experienced partnership.

Winter's long association with El Mundo, stretching back through multiple Olympic and World Championship cycles including Pratoni and the Paris 2024 Games, has made the gelding one of the most recognisable horses in Canadian eventing.
