Typhoon Dujuan Forces Delay To Asian Games Eventing
Organisers of the 20th Asian Games have postponed the equestrian Eventing competition to Tuesday as Typhoon Dujuan tracks toward Japan's Pacific coast, with forecasts warning of heavy rain, strong winds and a risk of landslides.
The 25th typhoon of the year in the region was positioned around 110 kilometres west-southwest of Hachijo Island and moving northeast at 20 kilometres per hour at the time of the announcement, with Japan's Meteorological Agency warning the storm could bring heavy rain to eastern and northeastern Japan through Tuesday, according to Kyodo News.
The host region of Aichi-Nagoya had not experienced adverse weather at the time organisers announced the postponement, but the local weather office had forecast conditions would deteriorate later that day, prompting the precautionary move ahead of any actual disruption to the Tokyo Equestrian Park venue. Eventing's dressage phase had been due to open the equestrian programme on 21 September, alongside Dressage and Showjumping competition running on schedule elsewhere at the same venue.
Organisers Act Before Weather Worsens
Dujuan was expected to pass near the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, between the evening and late night, with the agency also warning of intense downpours from linear rainbands over the eastern Kanto-Koshin region and the Tokai region of central Japan. A similar rainband was considered possible over Shizuoka Prefecture and the Izu Islands, raising the risk of prolonged heavy rainfall there.
Wider Disruption Hits Holiday Travel
The approaching storm had already disrupted travel beyond the Games, with sections of highway closed during a five-day holiday period in Japan. The Eventing postponement affects a competition originally scheduled to run as part of the broader equestrian programme at Tokyo Equestrian Park between 21 September and 4 October 2026, with organisers continuing to monitor the typhoon's path to determine whether the rescheduled Tuesday start can proceed as planned.
