Earhart Flies Solo Among the Colts
The stamina question at the heart of the day is answered last, in the Gr.1 St Leger Stakes (No Geldings) over 1m6½f, worth £700,000 (US$931,000) with £396,970 (US$527,970) to the winner. Pierre Bonnard, trained by A P O'Brien and ridden by Wayne Lordan, arrives as part of a three-strong raiding party from the same yard alongside Christmas Day and Action, with Amelia Earhart representing the O'Brien string's sole filly in the field of 11. Joseph Patrick O'Brien saddles two of his own in Enceladus and Highwayman, while Andrew Balding runs Galiyan and Hatteen. The Doncaster feature has long rewarded the O'Brien operation's staying types, and with three chances from the same stable the tactics alone promise to shape the finish before the stamina does.
