Bow Echo And Gstaad Renew Rivalry In Sussex Stakes
Old Rivals Set For Sussex Rematch
Bow Echo and Gstaad renew their rivalry for a third time in the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on 29 July 2026, with the George Boughey-trained, unbeaten colt raced in the colours of the executors of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid bidding to complete a sweep of the season's leading three-year-old miling prizes against Aidan O'Brien's Gstaad, campaigned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Michael Tabor.
Boughey's colt has beaten the Ballydoyle-trained runner in both of their previous meetings this season, by two and three-quarter lengths in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and by a short head in the Gr.1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Godolphin's Charlie Appleby and William Buick complete a leading trio with Opera Ballo, one of seven older rivals in the field on the Sussex Downs.
The Gr.1 Sussex Stakes is run over 1m at Goodwood on 29 July 2026 for three-year-olds and upwards on turf, with the going officially good. The race carries a £1,500,000 (US$2.0 million) prize fund, with the winner collecting £850,650 (US$1,131,000) from a 12-runner field headed by Bow Echo, Gstaad and Opera Ballo.
Bow Echo, a 3YO son of Night Of Thunder, arrives unbeaten in five career starts and drawn in stall four, with Boughey downplaying any extra burden that comes with defending a perfect record on the biggest stage yet. "The whole story of an unbeaten horse always captures the public imagination," Boughey said. The trainer sent the colt to Newmarket's July Course for a pre-race gallop, the same routine followed before his Classic victories this season, and reports him working through it well.
Gstaad, a three-year-old by Starspangledbanner, has never finished outside the top two in nine career starts and drew stall one for a race in which O'Brien, who has already saddled six Sussex Stakes winners, bids to draw level with the record of seven held by Sir Henry Cecil. The Irish 2000 Guineas winner has closed the gap on Bow Echo across their two clashes, and O'Brien believes the placings can be reversed. "It is always possible to turn the result around," the trainer said of the pair's Royal Ascot meeting, when Gstaad went down by a short head. Stablemates Puerto Rico, a dual Group One winner as a juvenile, and Dorset complete a three-strong hand for the Ballydoyle operation, with Dorset expected to set an early pace for his stable companions.
Opera Ballo Heads Older Generation
Opera Ballo, a 4YO Ghaiyyath colt who claimed his first Group One victory in the Gr.1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan on 23 January 2026, was set to make all the running in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes on 16 June 2026 before being caught in the closing stages, finishing third behind the winner Ten Bob Tony, with William Haggas's More Thunder second. Buick, seeking a first home Group One victory aboard the four-year-old, said: "It's always been the plan since the Queen Anne to go to the Sussex."
Ten Bob Tony, a five-year-old ridden by Kieran Shoemark for trainer Ed Walker, returns after winning the Gr.1 QueenAnne Stakes,while William Haggas saddles Lake Forest and Andrew Balding is represented by Never So Brave among the supporting cast of older milers. Ralph Beckett's 5YO Qirat, last year's winner of the race, and Harry Eustace's 6YO Docklands both return for another attempt, while Hugo Palmer's Seagulls Eleven completes the septet of older horses in the field.
Zavateri Back For Sussex Stakes 2026
Eve Johnson Houghton's Zavateri, a 3YO son of Without Parole, makes his first appearance since finishing runner-up in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes on 18 April 2026, giving connections a chance to establish whether the colt retains Classic-class form after a lengthy absence. Charles Bishop takes the ride for owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti.
The Sussex Stakes forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, the season-long sequence of Group and Listed races that culminates each October at Ascot.
With the unbeaten Bow Echo bidding to become the first colt since Frankel to complete the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace and Sussex treble, and Gstaad seeking to finally turn the tables on his fiercest rival, with Opera Ballo returning as the highest-profile of the older generation, the Sussex Downs promise a fitting third instalment to one of the season's most compelling rivalries.
Beyond its standing as the season's marquee mile showdown, the Sussex Stakes carries significance for Gulf racing followers as a recognised feeder event on the road to Dubai World Cup night, with form from Goodwood's Group One mile regularly informing the calculus for the Gr.1 Dubai Turf the following spring. Whichever of Bow Echo or Gstaad prevails, and however Opera Ballo fares in defeat or victory, connections with Meydan ambitions will be watching closely.
